One of the gifts America has given the world is fast food and "Fast Food Mania" (10 & 10:30 tonight, Destination America channel -- 256 digital tier Time Warner) celebrates how eating all that junk has made some of us a little crazy.
OK, it doesn't exactly take that approach. But what else to make of the 1,500 people who vie for 20 slots to be in the White Castle slider burger hall of fame?
Jon Hein, who has been on The Howard Stern Show and his own 'The Fast Food Show" on Sirius/XM, hosts this tour through the deep-fried and salty goodness. In the first episode, he visits White Castle, the Texas-based Whataburger chain and the familiar and much beloved Chik-Fil-A.
Hein keeps it light and amusing but still manages to give interesting trivia on each chain. He smartly focuses on the people who loves these places which makes for an engaging hour. You can't go wrong talking to seniors who aim to visit every Whataburger in the nation.
Hein does keep it only focused on the love; you meet Cravers, the White Castle fans and you get to see what it's like to spend the night trying to win a year of Chik-Fil-A sandwiches. Don't expect any talk about obesity rates or trans fats. This ain't the show.
Instead, it's a celebration of an American creation in all its excessive glory. With a side of fries.
