Hey, DWTS: Stop Breaking the Stars!

Bookmark and Share

Dancing with the Stars hasn't even started yet -- that happens this Monday night (8pm) -- and already three of the stars have been felled by injury.

Jewel and Nancy O'Dell's injuries were so severe they've withdrawn from the show. Jewel (left) suffered from a fractured tibia in both legs and can't even walk, much less dance. O'Dell suffered a knee injury -- a torn meniscus -- that will require surgery. Sex in the City actor Gilles Marini developed tendonitis in his shoulder and groin, and is taking anti-inflammatory medications. He says he plans to continue on the show.

Jewel and O'Dell will still appear on the show's premiere Monday, though I'm not sure in what capacity. Replacements will be announced that same night.

The show's executive producer, Conrad Green, said the injuries appear to be related to over-training. He said next season they will look at changes in the training regimens.

At some point, don't these "stars" have to wonder if potential injuries like two broken legs and knee surgery is worth the DWTS exposure? Maybe it's worth the gamble for a little career jumpstart.

There have been other injuries and and general medical weirdness associated with the show, which takes (mostly) out-of-shape B- and C-list celebrities and whips them into shape in a short amount of time. Some of the mishaps have been dance-related, but some have not. The word "curse" has been bandied about...

Here's a list, courtesy of TMZ: "Marie Osmond (fainted), Stacy Keibler (seizure), Susan Lucci (ankle), Jeffrey Ross (eye), Karina Smirnoff (fainted), Derek Hough (head injury), Misty May-Treanor (torn achiles), Mark Ballas (shoulder), Kym Johnson (shoulder), Toni Braxton (benign lump), Brooke Burke (foot), Julianne Hough (appendectomy), Jane Seymour (food poisoning), Cristian de la Fuente (arm), Kim Kardashian (foot). And let's not forget about the most tragic injury of all ... Lisa Rinna's lips."
