Happiness is a warm TV

Golden Globe TV nomination breakdown

Bookmark and Share

The Golden Globe nominations were announced today, and here's the way the TV stuff breaks down. There's some good stuff here, and we're really happy about all the "Mad Men" and "Glee" love. But what I really want to know is, what the heck has "Friday Night Lights" done to tick off all the awards people? It must be something very, very bad.

Best Television Series – Drama
Mad Men
True Blood
Dexter
Big Love
House

"True Blood" is campy and fun, but does it really deserve to be here more than "Friday Night Lights" or "Breaking Bad?" And I'm kinda over the whole "Big Love" thing too. It's good, but not better than some of the ignored shows. "Dexter" always gets my love. And for the whiners out there, "House" deserves to be here for the season premiere episode if nothing else. But in the end, it's hard to go against "Mad Men."

Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Drama
Jon Hamm, Mad Men
Hugh Laurie, House
Michael C. Hall, Dexter
Simon Baker, The Mentalist
Bill Paxton, Big Love

Much as I love and respect Simon Baker and Bill Paxton, let me just say: Bryan Cranston and Kyle Chandler. Sigh. Jon Hamm is the favorite here, but I also can't get Hugh Laurie from the season premiere of "House" out of my mind.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Drama
Anna Paquin, True Blood
Kyra Sedgwick, The Closer
Julianna Marguilies, The Good Wife
Glenn Close, Damages
January Jones, Mad Men

Anna Paquin? Really? She's better than Connie Britton on "Friday Night Lights?" I don't think so. Am I the only person who found the "Sooooookie and Bill" acting soap operaish? January Jones rules this category for her bitchy, ice queen portrayal of the 1960s housewife and alleged mother, Betty Draper.

Best Television Series – Comedy
30 Rock
The Office
Glee
Modern Family
Entourage

"Entourage" is another show I'm over, and this hasn't been the greatest season of "The Office." I would have picked "How I Met Your Mother" or "Big Bang Theory" here, but even if they were nominated, it's going to be a bloody fight to the death between "Glee" and "Modern Family." Or at least it should be.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Comedy
Tina Fey, 30 Rock
Edie Falco, Nurse Jackie
Toni Collette, The United States of Tara
Lea Michele, Glee
Courteney Cox, Cougar Town

I actually like "Cougar Town," but happen to think Courteney Cox is the weak link in the show. But I guess it's hard to come up with a list of lead comic actresses. Except for that whole Mary Louise Parker ("Weeds") thing. Tina Fey will probably repeat here.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Comedy
Alec Baldwin, 30 Rock
Steve Carell, The Office
David Duchovny, Californication
Matthew Morrison, Glee
Thomas Jane, Hung

Enh. I don't watch "Hung" and haven't seen "Californication" since season 1. And I love Matthew Morrison in "Glee," but he's not funny. Maybe that's not a requirement. Maybe you just have to be good *in* a comedy, not good *at* comedy. But it doesn't matter. Alec Baldwin.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Series, Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television
Jeremy Piven, Entourage
Neil Patrick Harris, How I Met Your Mother
William Hurt, Damages
John Lithgow, Dexter
Michael Emerson, Lost

It doesn't seem fair to have a sitcom actor, no matter how great he is, in the same category with heavy hitters from drama. For me, this is John Lithgow all the way. He's an amazing actor who completely (and creepily) stole this season of "Dexter." He needs his own series again, but Michael Emerson from "Lost" will likely win.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series, Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television
Jane Lynch, Glee
Rose Byrne, Damages
Janet McTeer, Into the Storm
Jane Adams, Hung
Chloe Sevigny, Big Love

[Rose Byrne: see Courteney Cox.] The most deserving here? For portraying Sue Sylvester, who can't stand the sight of kids getting emotional, unless it's from physical exhaustion, and who called wheelchair ramps "lazy-makers:" Jane Lynch. Jane Lynch. Jane Lynch. Jane Lynch. Jane Lynch. Jane Lynch. Jane Lynch. Jane Lynch. Jane Lynch. Jane Lynch.

Below are the nominations for TV movies, and I haven't seen them so I'm just guessing it'll be something from HBO:

Best Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television
Grey Gardens
Georgia O'Keefe
Into the Storm
Little Dorritt
Taking Chance

Best Performance by an Actress in a Mini-Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television
Drew Barrymore, Grey Gardens
Jessica Lange, Grey Gardens
Sigourney Weaver, Prayers for Bobby
Anna Paquin, The Couragous Heart of Irena Sendler
Joan Allen, Georgia O'Keefe

Best Performance by an Actor in a Mini-Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television
Kenneth Branagh, Wallander
Brendan Gleeson, Into the Storm
Kevin Bacon, Taking Chance
Chiwetel Ejiofor, Endgame
Jeremy Irons, Georgia O'Keefe
