Happiness is a warm TV

Golden Globe Awards: The Joker prevails

Ah, Ricky Gervais, who was the best part of the Emmy show last fall, comes out with a glass of beer in his hand and "shushes" the crowd, calling them rude film stars. He notes that he's not nominated for anything, and says that detracts from the credibility of the show. I loved his aside to Kate Winslet about how he told her if she made a Holocaust movie, the awards would come (a bit from his HBO show The Extras). Then Gervais goes on a funny rant about how his "romancing" of the foreign press for a nomination for his movie Ghost Town was in vain. He introduces a clip for the film Happy-Go-Lucky.

The Jonas Brothers give the Best Animated Feature Film award to Wall-E. The beautiful floppy-haired Johnny Depp gives the award for Best Actress in a Comedy Film. Sally Hawkins, from Happy-Go-Lucky, wins. She's crying and struggles through her speech, which is lovely. But I'm getting nervous for her because she's taking so long. She makes it through without getting played off.

Continuing with the beautiful man theme, we get Jake Gyllenhaal introducing the film The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Jessica Lange and Drew Barrymore (from Grey Gardens) seem a little bit tipsy maybe, and also totally into each other. The giggly ladies present the award for Best Mini-series or TV Movie. If I were betting, I'd go with something on HBO. Something about an ex-President whose name rhymes with Don Madams. Yep, John Adams wins. It won a ton of Emmys too.

Demi Moore comes out and tells her daughter Rumor Willis, the Golden Globe Girl, not to slouch. Then presents the award for Best Supporting Actor in a Film, and no surprise, it goes to a very deserving Heath Ledger. Standing ovation for Heath. Director Chris Nolan accepts the award for him. Just in case Heath won (it was a pretty safe bet), a short clip of him as The Joker was ready to play. Nolan makes a short but touching speech, and notes that when Heath died, a hole was ripped in the future of cinema.
