Martin Scorsese introduces a film tribute to the Cecil B. DeMille Award honoree Steven Spielberg. Spielberg talks about how he got into filmmaking (actually inspired by Cecil B. DeMille). I love Spielberg but I'm a little bored. Actually just took a cookie break during his speech. I see all his movies, that's enough.
Emma Thompson and Dustin Hoffman are out. (Adore them both and hate that the buzz for their new movie isn't great). Emma gives an obligatory "shush" (no lie) and then they both fumble over the teleprompter. Or maybe this is their schtick. They proceed with the award for Best Director of a Motion Picture. The winner is Danny Boyle for Slumdog Millionaire.
Sigourney Weaver introduces the clip for Revolutionary Road, the "Feel Bad" movie of the year.
Sandra Bullock comes out in a weird ruffly white dress to present the award for Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture. Colin Farrell wins for In Bruges. A shocked -- but giddy -- Farrell says they must have done the counting in Florida.
Salma Hayek introduces the film clip for Woody Allen's Vicky Cristina Barcelona.
Sasha Baron Cohen (Borat) is very funny but the crowd is NOT amused. In joking about hard economic times, Cohen notes that Charlie Sheen has been forced to have sex without paying for it, and that Madonna has had to let go one of her assistants (Guy Ritchie). Wow, what prudes. Some boos and disapproving head shakes in the audience. REALLY? As Cohen said, "come on!" Lighten up, Hollywood.
Anyway. Cohen announces the winner for Best Comedy or Musical Motion Pictue -- Vicky Cristina Barcelona. Woody Allen isn't there, naturally, but some other lady accepts the award along with the producers.
