Happiness is a warm TV

"Fixing Pete" is every woman's fantasy

Bookmark and Share

It is many a woman's dream to change her man, to tweak those things that annoy her and turn him into the Prince Charming they've always imagined marrying.

In "Fixing Pete," (9 tonight, Hallmark), our heroine does even better: She gets to physically, emotionally and sartorially shape her a good man.

Ashley Boyd (Brooke Burns) is a fashion editor and makeover specialist with grand ambitions. She's engaged to a broadcast journalist, and together they are perfect and perfectly happy living a superficial existence. They talk at each other, rather than to each other. Ashley's best friend is model/actress Mandy (played by Stacy Keibler aka the latest woman George Clooney is taking to Italy that's not me.)

Ashley's boss (Valerie Harper) promises her a top editing job, but in order to get it she must makeover her paper's top sports writer Pete Camden (Dylan Bruno), a slobby man-child, who has written a book and must go on a publicity tour. It's a formidable job; Pete wears dirty clothes he picks up off the floor of his filthy apartment and his hair looks like the bad wig we're not supposed to notice it is. He has a veteran actor boss, too (John Ratzenberger).

Of course, the two are disgusted by one another but this is a romantic comedy so we know it's just a matter of time before she transforms him into a stud and he gets her to loosen up a bit.

Everyone is perfect serviceable in their roles; the plot and dialogue don't have anything resembling nuance (and often don't even make sense), so there's no need for the actors to dig deep. Instead, the challenge is to not be annoying, and no one is.

No, the pleasure here is seeing a woman be right about everything. She buys all the furniture in her man's home and turns him into a better dresser, a better listener, even makes him better at his job. And he's thankful. Now that's good viewing!
