Diane Sawyer replacing Charlie Gibson on ABC "World News"

Bookmark and Share

Charles Gibson announced today that he is retiring from the top anchor spot at ABC's "World News" at the end of this year. Diane Sawyer will be taking his place.

Gibson became the anchor in 2006 after the death of Peter Jennings. Gibson says he'll stay with ABC and will make occasional contributions. "World News" currently trails NBC's "Nightly News with Brian Williams" in the ratings.

Sawyer is pretty much considered the savior of "Good Morning America," so it'll be interesting to see if their ratings slip when she leaves. GMA is my personal favorite (by a mile) when it comes to the morning shows, and Diane is one of the reasons. I think she'll be great at "World News," but I'll miss her on GMA.

Adrienne, on the other hand, "can't stand that woman." She doesn't like the "breathiness" of her delivery.

Where do you fall? On Team Diane or Team Charlie? Or will you stick with/switch to Brian on NBC, or Katie Couric on CBS?

I'm with Brian Williams

Though I think Diane Sawyer is a darn good interviewer and anchor for GMA, have to go with my man, Brian, for my nightly news fix on NBC. And, just curious, I wonder what Dan Rather thinks about this trend toward females?

Brian's voice

OY!  I can't take it; he sounds like a muppet!

CBS news was my channel of choice while Dan Rather was the anchor.  His news anchor voice was kind of grating, but I had the impression that he raised the bar for journalism at CBS.  (I don't have a clue how much influence the anchor really has, but even my step-mother complains that Katie's newscasts are heavy on the happiness.)

I think Dan Rather exploded, however, once he got caught in that fiasco.  What's the frequency, Dan?

Chung

Connie Chung is probably sticking pins in a Dan Rather voo-doo doll as we speak.
I also like Brian Williams. That's who I watch when I get home in time to watch the evening news, and since Peter Jennings died, that's usually who I watch if there's some big news event coverage (election, inauguration, etc). I just never took to Charlie. I do like Diane, though, so I'll probably cheat on Brian for awhile till I make up my mind.

++Diane

I can see Adrienne's point about Diane's delivery, but it's certainly better than Katie's cheerleader-esque, chirpy "HI, EVERYONE!!!". I mean it took Katie MONTHS to be able to deliver a normal openning and closing to her nightly news broadcast. I'm going to try ABC news for a while.

Since I'm under 60 years

Since I'm under 60 years old, I fall in "team internet" for news.

Ouch

Adrienne said to tell you that the internet can't flirt and squint at you as it breathlessly reads you the news. That's right. 64-year-old Diane Sawyer is just too damn sexy for the nightly news. Take that, Katie!

I hear those internet reporters are great. Especially the ones who do those big investigative pieces for Yahoo and Google.
