Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm guessing Clay Aiken is the first "American Idol" contestant to appear as a guest on CBS's "Face the Nation."
Clay, who is also a finalist on the current season of "The Celebrity Apprentice," was in-studio this morning on the Sunday morning news issues program to discuss gay marriage and the passing of North Carolina's constitutional amendment defining marriage as between a man and a woman.
Host Bob Schieffer identified Clay as "American Idol singer and activist," and his first question to Clay was if he believed President Obama's recent statement supporting gay marriage "pretty much ensures" that he's going to lose North Carolina in the presidential election.
"I don't agree that it seals it up for him," Clay responded. "I think as people in North Carolina start to look at this amendment and realize what it's doing not just for same-sex couples but for straight couples as well, they're going to reject it."
Clay noted that some polls in North Carolina show that more than 60 percent of people support some sort of recognition for same-sex couples, and said he believed the amendment to be a "political calculation" on the part of some in the General Assembly.
Clay also said he believes President Obama's support of gay marriage was a statement of principle and not a political tactic.
Shieffer then asked Clay if his decision to come out after having a child had any impact on his professional career. Schieffer noted that in country music, at least, the fan base is pretty conservative.
"It hasn't really had any impact at all in a negative sense," Clay told him. "It's had more of a positive impact." Clay told Schieffer that even the country music fan base is less conservative now than it was in 2003, when he was on "American Idol," and that in the past 9 years people have become more open and more understanding of homosexuality.
Clay also told Schieffer, referencing an earlier North Carolina constitutional amendment banning interracial marriage: "I really believe that in the next 20 years we're going to look back on this and be sort of ashamed of the fact that we were against this, just as we are ashamed today that we didn't let people of different races get married."
Schieffer asked Clay if he was going to vote for President Obama in the next election and Clay said he voted for Obama in 2008, and he believes that all gay men and women are more energized to vote for Obama now.
Clay told the News & Observer last week that even though he was disappointed that North Carolina's marriage amendment passed, he did not want people bashing his home state.
Other guests on today's "Face the Nation" were Deval Patrick, Ted Olson, Tony Perkins, Evan Wolfson, Mark McKinnon, and Mike Rogers.

Establishment of Caste
Mon, 05/14/2012 - 09:11 — cicero01The obvious effect of the marriage amendment is to establish a caste system into the social order of N.C. The Brahmins of the state (straights) voted not to share their advantages with the untouchables (gays.) Michael Bloomberg got it right. This does set back civil rights.
amendment
Mon, 05/14/2012 - 09:07 — dundeeClay is right that this was a political calculation. The vote was rigged. It was part of what was essentially a Republican primary, meaning a low Democrat turn-out. On top of that, unless they read the pamphlet handed out at the polls, most people thought they were voting stictly on gay marriage when it was much broader than that and affects civil unions and other unions that were not between a man and a women (other types of families). I am a moderate Independent who usually votes Republican, but this was dishonest no matter how you look at it.
Clay is a fine
Sun, 05/13/2012 - 23:43 — slimjimClay is a fine representative of the Gay community in NC and has the celebrity status to appear on Face the Nation. Yes.... Clay does several shows every year in the Raleigh area, but most of them are charity events which help disabled children. It is a shame so many have commented on this NC Native without knowing him.
I know and am honest about the racist and homophobic feelings and thoughts which are in my mind. I have spent the last fifteen years trying to silence the decades of speaking freely in an ignorant manner. I know the people I have hurt with the things I have said or done as far back as elementary school. I make an effort everyday to clean the slate by letting others be who they need to be and helping them move their lives forward....
It is a shame NC could not be different and allow others to move forward rather than forcing them to fight for basic human rights. As a conservative I am ashamed by those who would use Government Regulation to control a population they disagree with.... The NC Conservative movement in NC has come to an end and the Republican party has become the party which uses government to control citizens... Not in my North Carolina, gay rights in NC is a state issue I will fight for in an attempt to stop busy body republicans from forcing more Government into all of our lives....
CLAY AIKEN - THE "POLITICAL" EXPERT
Sun, 05/13/2012 - 22:33 — ViperRetBob Sheiffer must REALLY be hard up for guests or the DNC is really trying to get their message out there. 33 states (give or take) have voted FOR similar amendments. Admittedly, NC's is a bit more strenuous, but still it passed overwhelmingly. There has NEVER been an elected offical (national or state such as governor) elected with THAT high a percentage (61%).
So you just go with the flow. Clay is an activist. He is entitled to his opinion. He can try to persuade people. However, the voters were NOT swayed.
Most polling data show barely a 50/50 split. However, in the privacy of the ballot voting area, people vote their feelings. That percentage is probably skewed by the facts that folks LIE to polling folks (Ask John Kerry about that....he used up all his champagne and then had to hit the hard stuff when he lost).
The issue will continue to be discussed. The recent Newsweek cover will NOT be of benefit to Obama. He did raise several millions from the Gay and Hollywood community by "coming OUT", but it will probably cost him votes in the long run. The recent tracking polls have shown quite a loss.
Hope that Clay has time for a few new songs, but his activist role will impact my wife's desire to buy them. Wonder if he ever heard about the Dixie Chicks?
WHAT DOES CLAY AIKEN KNOW ABOUT HOW PEOPLE OF N. C. FEEL?
Sun, 05/13/2012 - 21:53 — carytuckerClay is just another gay person who wants to push his anti-religion views upon me and the rest of the public. How on earth can he lie about how many people want gay marriage when the voters clearly voted just this week a 61% majority to pass the amendment? Does the majority still rule in the nation or not?
And, by the way, please tell One Term Bev. to move on to some other state that will elect her and love her politics - but for me and the people from Mississippi - we love what we have and don't want it messed up.
Well he IS a person of NC.
Mon, 05/14/2012 - 01:51 — mediawatcherWell he IS a person of NC. Born here, raised here, still lives here, pays taxes here, votes here. And he is a self-professed Christian. And this issue is one that directly affects him much more than any of the 61% of voters who voted for the amendment. His comment on Face the Nation was that polls indicate that more than 60% of North Carolinians (which includes all North Carolinians, not just the measely one third of registered voters who voted) support some sort of recognition of gay couples, meaning civil unions, not gay marriage. He's not lying - that's a fact. But the wording of the amendment on the ballot which states that the amendment would outlaw civil unions was omitted meaning that many people didn't understand exactly what they were voting for. It doesn't just prohibit gay marriage, it also prohibits civil unions of gay couples and straight couples.
WELL, HE IS A PERSON OF NC

Aiken - staying in the spotlight
Sun, 05/13/2012 - 20:55 — justmaybeWhether or not Aiken is a political expert worthy of Face the Nation or not, he has been trying, working to keep his name out there in the face of the public and this was one more way to do it.
Clay did a home town show at Memorial Auditorium some time back, but except for that, and this, his star or decade old idol-ship is pretty faded. He's trying to find his place in the 2012 world of media. His PR man should have him on Helen Degeneris, on faltering "O" shows while the crest of this wave has not landed.
Hand it to Clay, he is persisent and never gives up. I expect him to keep his following even if it is moved from singing to public personality. Good luck!
good for him
Sun, 05/13/2012 - 20:52 — carbonLibclay is smart, gay and using his fame to help others see how bigotry played out in this vote to strip citizens of their rights, and force christian brand of "sharia law" on others..
The lying liberal news media statistics
Sun, 05/13/2012 - 20:45 — penniless_taxpayer5th paragraph: Clay noted that some polls in North Carolina show that more than 60 percent of people support some sort of recognition for same-sex couples, and said he believed the amendment to be a "political calculation" on the part of some in the General Assembly.
The problem as I see it is that the lying liberal news media has for several years now been publishing these FAKE polls showing that the majority of Americans want some form of "homosexual marriage" legalized. Consider the following:
So far the citizens of 31 states have voted to ban "homosexual marriage" in their state constitutions, including ultra-liberal California (3 times!), though that one is still in legal limbo. Minnesota is likely to be the 32nd state to ban it. 10 more states have laws against it, but no amendment, though they are working in that direction. Bear in mind that only 38 states are required to write and ratify an amendment to the U.S. Constitution. The only states where it is legal are those where it was FORCED on their citizens by a liberal democrat activist judge or a liberal democrat controlled legislature and not by public referendum. If those liberal news media polls showing 60% or more were truly correct, then surely at least ONE STATE would have voluntarily legalized "homosexual marriage" by a free and fair vote among its citizens.
Clay Aiken - the expert
Sun, 05/13/2012 - 20:44 — justmaybeLike others, I thought this was a joke...American Idol is creating political experts now!
Well, considering he IS gay
Sun, 05/13/2012 - 20:31 — mediawatcherWell, considering he IS gay and is a native North Carolinian and has also appeared on CNN and MSNBC discussing the NC Marriage Discrimination Amendment, I think he is exceedingly qualified to discuss the same on Face the Nation. As someone who actually watched the show this morning, I can say he discussed it intelligently and calmly and used great restraint in not hitting that idiot Tony Perkins.
You know, it is about time some of you opponents to gay marriage realize that gay people are indeed people, too. How many of you really know any gay person? They are not some abstract group of monsters that you can hate as a group although I guess it's easier to hate someone you don't know. In reality, they are your brothers and sisters, your sons and daughters, your co-workers, fellow church members. They are in all walks of life, raise families (gay families are families, too), pay taxes and vote. They are just as deserving of the right to share a life with a loved one as any heterosexual and that right does not in any way affect anybody else.
so are the 61% .....
Sun, 05/13/2012 - 20:34 — AgentPierceYour long sentence about "who gay people are ......". I went back and substituted the phrase "the 61% of North Carolinians who voted for the amendment are ........." and I found the exact same description fits them too. :-)
I know quite a few who voted YES on Tuesday and not a single one was an extra in Deliverance. They all have a full set of teeth and none to my knowledge have inter-married or chew tobacco. Go figure!
But I suppose all the hate towards them is somehow justified in your mind?
Actually that is my point.
Sun, 05/13/2012 - 20:46 — mediawatcherActually that is my point. Gay people are essentially the same as everyone else except for one factor. There is really no need to be threatened by them. They truly are not monsters. They just want what everyone else has - the right to legally commit to the person they love and to enjoy the legal protections that commitment provides. And nowhere in my post did I mention any hate towards the YES voters. I just feel sorry for the ignorance they possess.
"ignorance"
Sun, 05/13/2012 - 21:12 — AgentPierceThese comment boards have included so much venom towards us 61% since Tuesday I was speaking of the whole rather than you alone.
As for "feel sorry for the ignorance ....." that line or a variation of it comes up any time Conservatives try to figure why Lib/Dems are following their Pied Piper Obama.
Voting to infuse government
Mon, 05/14/2012 - 00:03 — slimjimVoting to infuse government into the lives of other citizens is not a conservative principal and 61% of you have failed the main test which allows you guys to call yourself conservatives.... You guys are a bunch of Rush Limbaugh wanna bees who have no idea what it means to be conservative....
Just because some fat Gas Bag on the radio who has married various times and recently married some gold digging tart half his age says same sex marriage must be stopped by voting for government regulations does not make you a conservative when you agree with him... It make you a hypocrite.
It makes you a busy body and a person swayed by media statements and propaganda. It makes you part of the American population which destroyed the conservative movement because you did not have the critical thought process to say NO!!! to infusing Government Regulations onto others... You failed the test and need to stop referring to yourselves as conservatives.
CAPSLOCK ??

Not sure what polls he is talking about, but I would be glad to give a rousing cheer and applause to anyone that wants to marry anyone or anything. I know of some elderly ladies that love their cats and would like to bequeath their estate to them while avoiding taxes on the first $500,000.
