CBS announced today that it is ending the soap opera "As the World Turns" after 54 years and more than 13,000 episodes.

The soap, set in the fictional town of Oakdale, Illinois, premiered in April of 1956. Its last episodes will air in September of 2010.

Earlier this year, the network canceled "Guiding Light," which had been on either TV or radio for 72 years.

Actresses Meg Ryan, Julianne Moore, Parker Posey, and Marisa Tomei all got their starts on "As the World Turns," which has won four 'Outstanding Drama' Daytime Emmy Awards.
