"XOX Betsey Johnson" runs on the designer's kooky sensibility

Before there were celebrity designers (and celebrities who wanted to be designers), there was Betsey Johnson. The punk-rock, crinoline petticoat wearing, handstand performing kookster makes clothes that make you smile -- joyous and girly.

She's still well-known and beloved but at 70, she's certainly past her prime. That would seem to suggest "XOX Betsey Johnson" (8 tonight, Style network) is a show past its shelf life. But in 2012, Johnson's company filed for bankruptcy. Good friend shoe king Steve Madden paid her debt and now Johnson is the creative director of what will be a mostly online Betsey entity.

So the reality show chronicles the Betsey comeback. And there's more: we learn about Betsey's relationship with her daughter Lulu, who worked with her designer mom for 13 years. She dropped out to raise her daughters. Now after a painful divorce, Lulu is ready to work again and launching her own line.

She's also trying to put some space between her and her mom. The two have a Joan and Melissa Rivers-type relationship, which is to say mothering can turn into smothering. They live in the same building down the hall from one another; Betsey often just strolls into the apartment unannounced. This has caused some issues. Betsey and Lulu actually attend couples therapy.

Betsey is the show; she's made for reality TV. She's a 70 year old who flirts with men half her age, she's bursting with creativity, she brings a water bottle filled with mimosa to her workout session. Watching Lulu build her business gives an inside view of what it takes to create a fashion line. And just about anyone who has a mother will relate to some aspect of the mother-daughter dynamic on the show.

"XOX Betsey Johnson" doesn't break new ground, but you can't help root for Betsey. Her love of life is contagious.

Angry South Carolina native Stephen Colbert: 'I am from North Carolina.'

Stephen Colbert declared himself a North Carolina native this week during a segment on "The Colbert Report" in which he discussed his sister, Elizabeth Colbert Busch, losing a congressional election in his home state of South Carolina to former disgraced South Carolina governor Mark Sanford.

The angry Colbert said he felt betrayed by his home state and would turn his back on it. "From now on," he said. "And I never thought I'd say this, I am from North Carolina. No, I have to -- I have to! I'm a Tar Heel now! Whatever the f*#$ that means."

Colbert then went on to profess his love for the state bird, the cardinal (after consulting an Almanac to get the bird's name right). "That's a stupid bird," he said. "But it's mine now."

Colbert also mentioned the state dog (the Plot Hound) before slamming North Carolina 'cue as a "sauceless, vinegar-based meat product that they call barbecue." Colbert then took a bite of some eastern N.C. barbecue and gagged.

We know Colbert is a great, great actor because there's no way he prefers that mustardy South Carolina mess to our delicious pig. Smithfield Chicken N' Bar-B-Q, a local barbecue and fried chicken chain, posted an open letter to Colbert on their website last night, challenging his barbecue tastes and offering to send him some of their barbecue and slaw in an effort to set his mind -- and taste buds -- right.

You can watch the full Colbert segment here.

A tribute to Jeanne Cooper of "The Young and the Restless" (VIDEO)

Say what you want about the state of the soap opera. For those of us who still watch, Jeanne Cooper, who played Katherine Chancellor on "The Young and the Restless," is worthy of being mourned. With her regal manner and sharp tongue, the actress played a matriarch, a woman who married money and then transformed into a formidable and shrewd businesswoman. Even Victor Newman stood in awe.

In real life, she was the mom of Corbin Bernsen, and we thank her for him too.

Enjoy this short clip of Ms. Cooper in an interview from the Archive of American Television.

Rest in peace, Duchess. We'll miss you.

PBS and PBS Kids channels added to Roku

We got pretty excited recently when Time Warner Cable added a TWC TV Roku channel, and now UNC-TV tells us that Roku is offering PBS and PBS Kids Channels?! Masterpiece Theatre, baby!! "Downton Abbey" and "Sherlock" on the Roku!! (Actually, there's no guarantee regarding specific Masterpiece programs, but fingers crossed.)

According to the press release, hundreds of streaming videos will be available, including PBS programs "Masterpiece," "Nova," "Frontline," "Austin City Limits," "Antiques Roadshow" and "Nature." PBS Kids programming includes "Curious George," "Dinosaur Train" and "Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood."

Some UNC-TV content will also be available. "North Carolina Now" and "North Carolina Weekend" are listed in the release.

You can access the PBS content by selecting one of the PBS channels on Roku and then choosing UNC-TV (or your local public television station if you live somewhere else) and sharing your email address. (That last part means you'll probably be hearing from PBS at some point in the <cough PLEDGE DRIVE cough> future.)

You can pick up a Roku at retailers like Target or Best Buy or Amazon starting around $50 (and you can stream Netflix, HBO Go, Amazon Prime and many other services over it).
