Happiness is a warm TV

'90210' is back... sorta

Kelly, Brenda and Jackie have left the building. All that remains of the old zip code is West Beverly Hills High and (Erin) Silver.

It’s OK. Annie, Dixon, Naomi and I will be just fine.

After devoting 10 years of my life watching the original “Beverly Hills, 90210”, I had a hard time wrapping my head around the new version.  I eventually tuned in to check up on the gang, and ended up trading in the Walshes for the Wilsons.

In case you haven’t been watching the new show, the premise is the same, but the faces have changed. The new characters and storyline are obviously based on the old: Brandon, Brenda, Jim and Cindy move from the midwest to Beverly Hills just as Dixon, Annie, Harry and Debbie do in the first episode. While Dixon reminds me of wholesome Brandon, he even gets a job at The Peach Pit, Annie is more of a mix between Donna Martin and Kelly Taylor. She’s a good girl who often makes bad decisions, and isn’t afraid to make a move on her friend’s ex-boyfriend (enter Ethan, aka the new Dylan).

Naomi Clark is the 2000s Kelly with a twist of Brenda Walsh. She doesn’t yet know it, but she’s about to become a “sister” to Annie and Dixon after it’s revealed that her mother and their father have a love child together. It’s the same plot twist the original 9-0 writers used to introduce Erin Silver.

In case you missed Tuesday’s episode, it’s Homecoming. Naomi, fed up with Adrianna’s drug problem, befriends Annie. With the help of Navid, Adrianna enters rehab, at least temporarily.

BFF’s Naomi and Adrianna reconcile at the dance while Annie sneaks off to make out with Ethan. Ooh drama.  Which of course sets up the next story arc of Annie and Naomi fighting over Dylan, er Ethan.

The new 9-0 is not as good as the old, or even “One Tree Hill” or “Greek” but it has a familiarity to it which is a comfort. I’ll keep watching if for no other reason than the predictable pending cameos. You know Donna, Brandon, David and, of course, Dylan, can’t stay away for long.

And for old-times sake, the Best Scene Ever from the original 9-0 ("I think it's time I started seeing you.):

I did see the Adrianna OD

I did see the Adrianna OD episode. It was a good one.

It will be interesting to see how the relationship with Naomi and Adrianna plays out. Right now it seems as if Adrianna is somewhat of an outsider while Naomi is trying to move on with her life.

Can't wait for next week!

Love this show

I liked the old one and like the new one. Did you see the episode where Naomi's friend almost overdosed? That was pretty good. I'm glad it's back. Only problem is it's on the CW Network.
