With smartphone displays, it seems big is in, and the HTC Droid DNA 'haz' it. The 5-inch display is one of the largest available with Verizon Wireless. HTC likes to call itself "quietly brilliant," but this Droid is said to draw inspiration from the not so subtle Lamborghini.
Highlights
With a1080p resolution stuffed into a spectacular 5-inch screen, the HTC Droid DNA has a class-leading display.
The Droid DNA is lightweight, and handles much more easily than one might expect for a 5-inch screen.
HTC phones have among the most remarkable build-quality. The device feels solid and the soft-touch coating on the back enhances the premium feel. Samsung could learn much from HTC.
Nitpicks
The buttons work just fine, but don't offer much tactility. The volume rocker is nearly flush with the surface of the phone, and some find it difficult to find by touch, despite being textured.
Don't expect much from the Beats Audio. If your audio gear needs a boost, you'll be better off with an equalizer from the Google Play app store - or better headphones.
You'll be tempted to tear off the protective charge/data port cover.
Things to consider
Android Jelly Bean leaves little to be desired compared to iOS. Is it apples to oranges? Either way HTC's Sense 4.0 interface that is skinned over Android gets praise from most. Its simpler, cleaner and more attractive than Samsung's TouchWiz.
Some may find its on-board storage too small. There is about 11GB left over of the 16GB, and there is no card slot for expansion.
The camera delivered images good enough to satisfy most. It's not going to win any shoot-outs, especially in low light conditions, but HTC has included a fairly powerful camera app with filters and comprehensive shooting options.
The 2200mAh battery is enough to get most users through a day, but game or media junkies will need a boost at some point.
The bottom line
For $200 with Verizon, the HTC Droid DNA combines quad-core power with one of the best smartphone displays ever, and 5-inches of it. This in a supercar-inspired design with likely better build quality. If you're looking for smartphone with a large display on Verizon's network, the DNA should make the top of your list of devices to explore.
