Two North Carolina universities have made another top 50 list, but this is one ranking schools would prefer to avoid.
Using the torrent tracking service ScanEye, a TorrentFreak report ranked the top 50 schools with the most BitTorrent usage which is an indicator for pirating unauthorized media.
BitTorrent, a peer-to-peer file sharing protocol intended for distributing large files on the Internet, is used primarily to illegally download songs, videos, and software to avoid paying for them. Some, but few use BitTorrent to legally distribute content.
Based on BitTorrent usage, N.C. Central University is ranked No. 17, and Duke snuck in at No. 48. Rutgers gets the notorious honor of topping the list.
Being deep within ACC territory, it is worth noting that Maryland cracked the top ten at No. 9, and Clemson University is listed at No. 31.
The Ivy League also broke into the top 50 pirating campuses with Columbia at No. 14 and at Harvard at No. 33.
