Michael Dean Chadwick joins the Rangers

Michael Dean Chadwick, Josh Hamilton's father-in-law, has been named as a special assistant by the Texas Rangers.

Chadwick is expected to travel with the team and be an accountability partner to Hamilton.  When the Rangers acquired Hamilton four years ago, the club brought in Johnny Narron to be Hamilton's accountability partner. Narron has accepted a position as Milwaukee's hitting coach for the 2012 season.

Scotty 'really nervous' about singing anthem tonight

Scotty McCreery has already won "American Idol" and debuted with the No. 1 album in the nation. Tonight, the lifelong baseball fan will have another dream fulfilled — he'll be singing the National Anthem before the first game of the World Series.

Scotty got a little practice earlier this month when he sang the National Anthem before N.C. State's home football game against Central Michigan. (See a photo gallery of that performance here.)

But in an interview this morning from St. Louis, Scotty said he's still "really nervous" because this is such a big stage to be singing on. He said his mother, Judy McCreery, has been having him write and rewrite the words to the song so he doesn't forget them.

He's also drinking a lot of warm tea today to get his voice ready. (It's cold and rainy in St. Louis this morning, he reports.)

Free baseball skills clinic planned for seventh-graders

Is another Josh Hamilton waiting to emerge from the Triangle's baseball ranks?

He might get some help from an Eastern North Carolina baseball family.

On Jan. 8, the Narron family and friends will conduct a free skills clinic for players in the seventh grade.

Josh Hamilton on a tear

Alumni News: Josh Hamilton voted to second All-Star game

America hasn't had enough of the Josh Hamilton story. That much can be assumed after the former Athens Drive High star, despite missing half of this season with injuries, received more than 2.4 million votes to the American League All-Star team.

Hamilton had the third-highest total of any outfielder, which, if healthy enough to play, gives him a starting spot in the MLB All-Star game on July 14 game in St. Louis.

Hamilton voted to AL All-Star team

Josh Hamilton and the feel-good story of his battle back from substance abuse problems continues to make the former Athens Drive High star one of the most popular players in baseball.

Despite missing more than half of the Texas Rangers' games this season because of injuries, Hamilton received 2,412,359 fan votes for the All-Star Game to rank third among American League outfielders and grab a starting spot for the July 14 game in St. Louis.

Hamilton to have surgery

Josh Hamilton's baseball season was put on hold Monday when the Texas Rangers announced that the former Athens Drive High star will undergo surgery on Tuesday to repair a partial tear in an abdominal muscle.

Hamilton is expected to miss 4 to 6 weeks.
