The Carolina RailHawks brought in their biggest name so far this offseason as the team made its signing of 20-year-old defender Gale Agbossoumonde on Thursday.
Agbossoumonde has experience playing on the U-23 U.S. men's national team. He comes to Carolina on loan from Portugese franchise Estoril Praia.
The defender is in his last year of a contract with Traffic Sports USA, which also owns the RailHawks. The tenuous relationship between Agbossoumonde and Traffic Sports was documented by ESPN.com in 2010.
After struggling to receive much playing time in his previous stops in Germany, Sweden and Portugal, he reportedly turned down offers from Major League Soccer this season.

The Carolina RailHawks now have three new signings -- and one is a familiar face.
The Carolina RailHawks announced their first new player signing of the offseason on Friday as Jason Garey joins the team after six seasons in Major League Soccer.
Former Carolina RailHawks defensive midfielder Jun Marques Davidson has joined coach Martin Rennie and all those other former RailHawks in Vancouver.
It's interesting to think back to that 2010 team. By the end of the regular season, it had seven future MLS players and one more who is playing first-division league in Denmark.
The Carolina RailHawks will open the season in the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome against the defending NASL champion Minnesota Stars. The RailHawks' first gome game is April 14 against the Atlanta Silverbacks.
Other important dates to consider:
On the same day that Carolina RailHawks goalkeeper Brad Knighton signed with the Vancouver Whitecaps of Major League Soccer, Carolina's all-time leading scorer Etienne Barbara wound up there as well.
Goalkeeper Brad Knighton becomes the fourth member of the RailHawks to move up a level of professional soccer and sign with the Whitecaps this offseason.
As things tend to be in the North American Soccer League, the identity of the new RailHawks coach is a poorly-kept secret.
What's not poor? The hire itself.
N&O columnist Luke DeCock has confirmed that the Carolina RailHawks have finalized a contract for Colin Clarke to become the RailHawks new coach, and the former Puerto Rico Islanders coach will be introduced at a press conference on Tuesday.
A reception for sponsors and other VIPs will be Wednesday, December 7th at 7:00pm at Tir na Nog in Raleigh.
