Kids’ Health Carnival on Saturday

The Junior League of Durham and Orange Counties are inviting children from kindergarten through grade 5 to attend the Kids in the Kitchen Health Carnival this Saturday.
The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Eastway Elementary School, located at 610 N. Alston Avenue in Durham.
Admission is free.
Parents are encouraged to attend with their children.
Activities at the carnival are scheduled to include wellness checkups by local health care practitioners, yoga for kids, hands-on demonstrations of how to prepare healthy snacks, presentations of nutritional information, and cooking demonstrations by local chefs.
The event is planned to help “empower youth to make healthy lifestyle choices and help reverse the growth of childhood obesity and its associated health issues,” organizer Lily Hsu said.

Foods of minimal nutritional value

Are you in favor of no longer allowing homemade foods and foods of "minimum nutritional value" to be served at classroom celebrations?

As noted in today's article, that's part of the recommendations from the Wake School Health Advisory Council for making students healthier. The group wants stronger implementation of the district's wellness policy.

While the policy doesn't specifically mention classroom celebrations, it does talk about the foods that can be served during the school day.
