Laviolette admittedly vague on injuries

PHILADELPHIA -- Carolina Hurricanes coach Peter Laviolette wouldn't give more detail about Scott Walker’s lower leg injury.

Ditto for Tim Gleason’s injury.

“He’s got a leg injury,” Laviolette said of Walker. “That’s about as far as we want to go with it."

A decision last summer by NHL general managers paved the way for such vague responses. And under the glare of the Philadelphia media after Friday's 3-2 overtime victory over the Flyers, Laviolette defended the lack of details.

Hansbrough out indefinitely

North Carolina forward Tyler Hansbrough had missed only two career practices previous to Thursday. Now, he’ll miss an indefinite number more

The consensus National Player of the Year was diagnosed with a stress reaction in his right shin, coach Roy Williams announced in a statement, and the senior will be sidelined for an unknown period of time.

Reached Thursday night, Tyler’s father, Gene Hansbrough, said he was confident his son would heal soon.

“I think he’ll get well pretty quick,’’ said Gene Hansbrough, an orthopedic surgeon. “…These things happen, and he’ll be all right.”

North Carolina starting offensive guard Bryon Bishop and defensive tackle Tydreke Powell are listed as "questionable" for Saturday's game against Connecticut, according to the team's injury report, which was released Thursday.

Monday debate: the injuries

OK, what is it? Why all the injuries?

When Justin Williams tore his Achilles last week, it was called a fluke thing. But considering all the Canes' injuries in the last year or so, was it?

Bad luck? On Saturday, a black cat was seen wandering among the players' cars and trucks at the RBC Center. Could it be something about the Canes' training regimen? Just coincidence? Or is it just hockey?

All theories are welcome.

Rutherford: Brind'Amour could play in preseason games

Rod Brind’Amour was seen in the training room icing down his left knee as camp got underway at the RBC Center this morning. The Canes captain had his knee scoped this week to repair a cartilage tear.

Brind’Amour insisted he would be back soon and Rutherford said it’s possible he could play in a couple of preseason games.

Williams' teammates try to cope

Chad LaRose knew it was bad. Very bad.

The Hurricanes forward was working out Wednesday with teammate Justin Williams, getting in some off-ice exercises, when ...

"I was right next to him. He just stopped and there was a big pop," LaRose said today. "We all heard it — a big pop."

Canes' Williams to miss 4-6 months

The Hurricanes suffered a big blow today when forward Justin Williams tore his right Achilles tendon, requiring surgery.

Williams, who suffered the injury in an off-ice workout this morning, is expected to be out four to six months. The seven-year veteran missed much of last season with a serious knee injury.

"It's certainly a setback for us," general manager Jim Rutherford said. "We were looking forward to Justin having a big year. This doesn't mean he won't be a part of it. He can come back for the most important part of it."

Brind'Amour has knee surgery

Hurricanes captain Rod Brind'Amour underwent successful surgery on his left knee this morning to repair torn cartilage, but he is expected to be on the ice before the team's season opener.

"It was a little house-cleaning procedure," general manager Jim Rutherford said. "It was expected. We felt it was best to have it performed now instead of, say, the start of the season.

"He'll be out a few weeks and will miss most of training camp. But we don't have any concerns about Roddy. He's always working out and he has been skating hard, and he'll be ready opening night."

The Canes open the regular season Oct. 10.

Brind'Amour, 38, missed the final 22 games of last season after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, requiring reconstructive surgery.

Brind'Amour participated in the Friesen 5K Fun Run on Sunday.
