Virginia will replace Al Groh with one of his former assistants, Mike London, according to the Roanoke Times.
The Cavaliers have scheduled a press conference today at 1 p.m. to introduce their new coach. London has spent the past two seasons as the head coach at Richmond, winning the FCS national title in 2008.
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Virginia has fired Al Groh after nine seasons as football coach at his alma mater.
Groh’s dismissal Sunday comes less than 24 hours after the Cavaliers (3-9, 2-6 ACC) finished their worst season since going 2-9 in 1982 with a 42-13 loss to rival Virginia Tech.

The CAA: Apparently, conferences are like report cards, the more A's, the better. The Colonial Athletic Association, gave the ACC a lesson in humility with Richmond's win at Duke and William & Mary's upset of Virginia. The lower Division I conference has more wins (two) over BCS teams than the ACC (one).

UNC has not won at Virginia since 1981, a span of 13 losses.
At least two — in 1996 and 2006 — were memorable. The '96 game was the infamous Chris Keldorf interception which cost Mack Brown and the Heels a spot in the Fiesta Bowl.
The 2006 game was John Bunting's last before getting fired. The Heels were completely unprepared and uninspired for a Thursday night trip to Charlottesville and the end result was a 23-0 loss and Bunting's job. He was fired before the weekend, although he coached the final five games before actually leaving.
That scratching sound you hear is Virginia boosters scraping through the pockets of their orange sport coats to find the spare change to buy out Al Groh's contract.
UNC: The Tar Heels looked good, Mack Brown Good, Thursday night, and it was not just those navy blue pants. Even if Rutgers finishes 3-9, it doesn't matter. With the mental "road" block out of UNC's way, the schedule is suddenly wide open for the Heels to win nine or 10 games, even if they lose the next two games (Virginia Tech and Miami).
ECU's in the top 25, and UNC is not far behind. Hide the cutlery from the State fans.
The first ACC coach to directly feel the heat of David Cutcliffe’s improvements at Duke will be Virginia’s Al Groh.
By the time Virginia visits Duke on Sept. 27 (both sides are blessed with open dates leading in), Groh will be facing a must-win assignment. It’s a strange turn of events for the guy who last season was voted league coach of the year after leading his team to a surprising 9-4 and a respectable, yet losing effort against Texas Tech in the Gator Bowl.

• With a lack of playmakers at running back and receiver, Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer had no choice but to lift Tyrod Taylor's redshirt. The sophomore will share snaps with Sean Glennon this week for the Hokies against Furman.
"You've got a chance when he's in the ball game for a big play," Beamer said. "Run or the pass, he presents a threat."
