According to my calculations, no fewer than 20 future Division I players are in this year's GSK Tournament. Although it's talent this year is undeniable, how memorable will these individuals be in the record books?
Will anyone come near Donald Williams' tournament record of 115 points? Is anyone on pace to break 90 points for the tournament, something only 12 other players have ever done before?
As of right now, it's hard to say. There's not a seventh-place game, so if your team loses twice, you're done. That could affect how many total points somebody like Akeem Richmond or Nolan Dennis can post. Each guy threw up 30 points or more in an opening-game loss.
Even though Mason Plumlee, Ryan Kelly, John Wall and C.J. Leslie are probably four of the five best players in the tournament, they all play on teams that don't need them to score a ton in order to win by 20+ points.
Below, I have a listing of 20 prospects and how many total points they have going into Monday. Some guys, like Apex's Weston Murphy, may have played themselves into better scholarship offers.
Others, like Melvin Tabb of Enloe, haven't proved much thus far. Still other prospects, like sophomore Marshall Plumlee, didn't make my list (Marshall has four points, doesn't even start, but has offers from Indiana, Purdue and Notre Dame).
Here's the list, with how many points scored (for one game unless otherwise noted), what school they have committed to and remember, teams won't play any more than three games:
Earnest Ross - 56 points (2 games played) - Panther Creek, Auburn
Ryan Kelly - 51 points (2 games played) - Ravenscroft, Duke
Weston Murphy - 43 points (2 games played) - Apex
Reggie Bullock - 35 points - Kinston, North Carolina (2010)
Akeem Richmond - 31 points - Southern Lee
Nolan Dennis - 30 points - Richland (Tx.), Memphis
Matt Wilson - 27 points (2 games played) - Ravenscroft, UNC-Wilmington
Lorenzo Brown - 23 points - Centennial (Ga.), N.C. State
Andre Marhold - 22 points - North Mecklenberg
C.J. Leslie - 19 points - Word of God, N.C. State (2010)
Mason Plumlee - 18 points - Christ School, Duke
Melvin Tabb - 18 points (2 games played) - Enloe
Tashawn Mabry - 17 points - Rocky Mount
