How the conference was won

Bookmark and Share

OK, so disregard the earlier post (we'll leave it up to give you reference at what we were looking at earlier today). As it turns out Green Hope will win the girls lacrosse Conference 2 title and will be the 1-seed heading into postseason play. How?

Lacrosse is screwy.

In both the boys and girls lacrosse Conf-2, teams don't even play each other twice. As a result, the league only counts one meeting as a conference game. The other, is a nonconference game.

Apparently, the coaches of Green Hope and Apex girls lacrosse teams were unaware, thinking there was a tie.

This past Tuesday's game counted as the conference game between the two, improving Green Hope to 5-0, not 9-1. The earlier loss to Apex (which is now 4-1) was not a conference game. The Falcons are now done with the conference slate as this Friday's game with Cary counts as a nonconference meeting.

Perplexing, isn't it? There were a few "nonconference" dates set aside before the year, including this Friday.

So even though Apex and Green Hope split, it is Apex that will be hosting a first-round game with a wild card team before playing Wilmington Hoggard at Wilmington in the second round. Green Hope will get a bye in the first round and host in the second.

To recap, Green Hope finishes with a 5-0 league record, while Apex is second at 4-1. These are the only two automatic bids for the conference, although Panther Creek could get a wild-card spot.

On the boys side, Apex should still clinch as they won this Tuesday — which did count as a conference game — despite losing back on March 23.

To recap that, Apex wins the conference with a 5-0 league record. Holly Springs is second at 4-1 and Green Hope will have to try to get a wild card spot at 3-2.

If you look at the laxpower.com site, all Conference 2 teams on the girls side were scheduled to play home-and-away against every other conference team. For some reason, the March 23rd match between Cary & Middle Creek (listed on both teams' schedules) was not played nor rescheduled, and that was the only one missed in an otherwise complete conference season.
