Here we are, the opening game of Day Two at the GlaxoSmithKline Holiday Invitational Tournament. This morning Apex will try to stave off elimination as it takes on Enloe in the loser's bracket of the Hospitality Invitational. We'll keep you posted as the game moves along this morning.
--It's a less-than-capacity crowd here, to say the least. I'm sure that'll be a different story tonight, when Panther Creek, Ravenscroft, Middle Creek and Christ School all in action.
--With 2:20 left in the first, it's 8-3 Enloe. Neither team can find a rythm offensively.
--Not much has happened since that ^^ post. 10-3 after the first quarter. Apex is blowing layups, wide-open three's and having far too many turnovers to do anything right.
--Apex and Enloe are throwing up enough bricks to build an apartment complex! It's been 13-3 for an eternity.
--With three minutes left in the second, Apex has gotten a backdoor layup from Adam Perry and a goaltending call to make it seven.Unfortunatley, Enloe has 19. 19-7 your score
--Credit Weston Murphy for staying with it. He boards his own miss twice and gets the old-fashioned three-point play to go. Melvin Tabb has gotten two put-back, one of them a dunk, to make it 23-12.
--Scary moment as Enloe's Charles Ashley stays on the ground for several minutes after thumping his head against the floor after falling on the shot. Ashley walks off on his own power, to the applause of all in attendance.
--Courtney Pulley of Enloe gets a friendly bounce on his 3-point shot to make it 26-12 with 30 seconds left in the first half, and that's your score going into halftime.
--Down goes the server! Down goes the server!
--I'm at Bruegger's on Hillsborough St., the only place I know where I can for sure get some internet around here. Here's what happened after the server went down (I typed it out in a text document, aren't I committed?)
--No sooner does Apex cuts the lead to four, at 32-28, than does Enloe increase it 10. 38-28 Enloe early in the third.
--Apex had a nice third quarter, fueled by 10 points from Weston Murphy. The kid is making a name for himself here, scoring at ease against not only Ryan Kelly and Matt Wilson, but now Melvin Tabb.
-- Just 2:28 left, it's Enloe 41, Apex 34.
--A Murphy lay-in off a nice Kyle Waters pass makes it 43-36. Here comes Apex.
--Enloe starts to hold the ball with 1:30 left, and Apex is forced to foul. Emanuel Chapman hits two to make it 45-36, 1:20 to play.
--Apex's Kyle Waters with the two. 45-38 with 1:01 left.
--Tabb blows what could've been a wide-open dunk by kicking the pass out of bounds. Huge break for Apex.
--Waters drives and dishes to Houston Hawley, who scores after a nice pump fake gets Tabb airborne. Timeout Apex. 40.4 seconds left, down 45-40.
--Enloe's Pulley misses the front end of the 1-and-1 and Murphy slams the ball out of bounds off Tabb. Cougars ball with a chance to cut it down to one possession. Incredible how they'd scrapped their way back into it.
--Waters misses a wide-open 3-pointer that would've cut it to two. Apex has to foul and Jared Blakney hits both free throws. 47-40 now.
--Mike Fogg misses a three, and this one is all but over. Enloe shooting two, up 47-40 with 7.4 seconds left.
--It was a valiant effort for Apex, especially considering how poorly it started. A few converted layups here and some knocked down 3-pointers there, and this could've gone the other way. Enloe wins it though, 48-40.
--Leading the way for Apex was Weston Murphy with 21. Melvin Tabb led Enloe with 14. Those two were the only players in double-figures.
