Cary Imps named 4th-most unique nickname by Sports Illustrated
In a recent article by Sports Illustrated, the Cary High Imps were dubbed the No. 4 most unique high school nickname.
The Imps fell behind only the Lakeland (Fla.) Dreadnaughts, the Glenville (Oh.) Tarblooders and the Cairo (Ga.) Syrupmakers.
Here's an excerpt from the article:
"4. Cary Imps, Cary, N.C.
The name is awesome, but the logo is even better. Imagine if the Great Gazoo fromThe Flintstones had turned demonic and started a steroid/imp growth hormone regimen that even Bill Romanowski would have considered excessive. You would let this imp call you a dumb-dumb."
J. Mike Blake
J. Mike Blake is a recent graduate of N.C. State who grew up playing against the same Western Wake schools he now covers. At Western Harnett, he defeated the likes of Cary, Apex, Green Hope and Middle Creek repeatedly in basketball, but never once defeated them in tennis. Over the past year, J. Mike has been an N.C. State beat writer for WRAL.com, covered the ACC Tournament and worked on Football Friday for one and a half seasons.

I'm sure Cherrryville High School is disappointed that they were not good enough to rate a mention from SI as they are also the Ironmen...
