In a recent article by Sports Illustrated, the Cary High Imps were dubbed the No. 4 most unique high school nickname.
The Imps fell behind only the Lakeland (Fla.) Dreadnaughts, the Glenville (Oh.) Tarblooders and the Cairo (Ga.) Syrupmakers.
Here's an excerpt from the article:
"4. Cary Imps, Cary, N.C.
The name is awesome, but the logo is even better. Imagine if the Great Gazoo fromThe Flintstones had turned demonic and started a steroid/imp growth hormone regimen that even Bill Romanowski would have considered excessive. You would let this imp call you a dumb-dumb."
J. Mike Blake has played against or covered teams in southern Wake County for six years. He is the Sports Editor for The Cary News and Southwest Wake News. He graduated from N.C. State in 2008. He loves getting young athletes' names in the paper, but hates hearing "CALL IT BOTH WAYS REF!!" 4,000 times every basketball game.

I'm sure Cherrryville High School is disappointed that they were not good enough to rate a mention from SI as they are also the Ironmen...
