In their second Pool Play game of the USBA national tournament in Myrtle Beach, S.C., the Cary Cougars nearly blew a 25-point lead, scraping by the Seymour Johnson AFB Sharp Shooters 75-71 in overtime.
With 18 seconds left and down by two, the Cougars' Tariq Forte (a 53 percent free throw shooter) sank the first, missed the second, but got his own rebound and laid in the putback to put Cary on top 69-68.
The Sharp Shooters made one-of-two free throws to send it into overtime, where the Cougars never trailed. Austin Brannen led the way with 19 points, while Tariq Forte and Bruce Lewis added 11.
In their third Pool Play game, the Cougars led nearly the entire game over the South Maryland Eclipse (the Eclipse only led on the game's opening basket) en route to a 72-47 drubbing.
The win secured the No. 1 seed for the Cougars in tournament play, which starts today. Kameron Bryant led the way for Cary with 16 points, while Tariq Forte had 12 and Bruce Lewis added 10.
The Cougars will play today at 3:30 against the winner of Carolina Pride and the Birmingham Heat. A win will put Cary in the championship game at 4:45 on Saturday, while a loss will send the team back home.
Rob Orton's team is 22-11 this year, including 21-5 against its division.
EDIT: The Carolina Pride won this morning, and will play the Cougars next.
