Alumni News: Former Cary player drafted by Braves

Bookmark and Share

Former Cary High baseball player Cory Harrilchak has been selected by Major League Baseball's Atlanta Braves in 14th round (418 overall) of the 2009 MLB Draft.

Harrilchak has spent the last two years as a standout centerfielder for the Elon Phoenix after transferring from Surry Community College.

As a senior, Harrilchak batted .336 with 18 doubles, three triples and 16 home runs. He was named first-team All-Southern Conference after setting school records in runs in a season (79) at bats in a season (256) and finishing third in hits for a season (86).

According to the Elon athletics website, Harrilchak was a preseason All-American for three different publications after finishing his junior year batting .410. He was the first Elon player to bat .400 or better since 1988.

In his two seasons with the Phoenix, Harrilchak scored 150 runs, the 10th-most in program history.  He also belted 27 homers to rate in a tie for ninth on the school's career chart.

ElonPhoenix.com also had this from Harrilchak, adding he is expected to join the Braves' Rookie League affiliate, the Danville Braves.

"It's a great organization," Harrilchak said of the Braves.  "I think I can learn and develop a lot with them.  I'm just happy to be a pro athlete.  The draft's a fickle thing."

Harrilchak added, "I'm very grateful to Elon.  I'm thankful for what the coaches have done to help me get to this point."

Harrilchak batted .480 as a senior at Cary High and was a two-time all-conference selection and two-time academic all-conference honoree. He also starred on coach Jerry Winterton's wrestling team, where he was also a four-time all-conference wrestler.
