Now playing in Theater 5 — a little slice of democracy

Last night I attended the Glalaxy Cinema free viewing of Barack Obama's nomination accpetance speech at the Democratic National Convention.

The event was sponsored by the local Obama campaign office and it was great to see so many people, probably around 300, come out in support of the presidential race.

I was surprised by just how excited people became during the viewing. I've become used to buttoned-down government meetings and Cary's careful civility. What a shock — a great one — to see people dancing around, shouting out boisterous approvals and talking readily to strangers about their views.

They became so boisterous in fact that when a volunteer from the local Obama campaign office tried to speak for a few minutes about how people could help, he was loudly heckled by a very vocal minority.

"We're here to see the video. This is history. Step off." That's what he heard as the sound was dimmed for a few moments BEFORE Obama's speech.

I felt sorry for the guy. I didn't think it was too much to ask of people that they listen for a few minutes about what the organization that provided the event for FREE needs help with accomplishing.

Many of the people I interviewed during the night said they appreciated Obama's civility in dealing with his opponents. Maybe some of his Cary supporters should learn a little of it.

I doubt Obama would ever loudly yell at a speech-engaged opponent anything like "Step off McCain. Just step off!"

Overall though it was great to see so many people interested in politics, and sharing that interest with their community.

I hope that local Republicans do something similar for their convention next week.

Democracy? Are you sure?

Sorta reminded me of Adolf Hitler's famous Labor Front speech at Nuremberg in 1936. The democrats of today are the fascist of yesterday, i.e., fascism with a smile.
