Cary's Ben Kohles shot a 5-under 67 at Cape Fear Country Club in the first round of the 94th annual Carolinas Amateur in Wilmington.

Kohles, who graduated from Green Hope High last month and will play at Virginia in the fall, trailsSean Goshert of Conway, S.C., by one stroke.

Michael Marshburn, also of Cary, is tied for 10th place with six others at three-under 69.

The Carolinas Amateur continues play today with 18 more holes of stroke play. At the conclusion of today's round, the low 32 golfers will advance to match play. The two finalists will play a 36-hole championship match on Sunday.

The par 72 Cape Fear course, one of the oldest in the state, measures 6,856 yards for the tournament.
