SI writer offers apology to N.C. State fans

Bookmark and Share

Sports Illustrated's Andy Staples posted the video of the day with his apology to N.C. State fans for insulting the crowd noise at Carter-Finley Stadium before the Wolfpack's 17-16 win over Florida State last Saturday.

(See more photos from the Wolfpack's win here and here.)

Staples had a little fun with the Wolfpack faithful, which is known to be difficult on both rival fan bases and the media.

"I understand that some of you may take my college transcripts and post them on the Internet because I know some of you are very good at that," Staples joked in Tuesday's video. "But please, accept my apology."

Here's what Staples wrote last Tuesday, in his power rankings column, to prompt the apology:

"To prepare for the raucous crowd at Carter-Finley Stadium — I couldn't type those words with a straight face — FSU has saved the expense of speakers to pipe in crowd noise. The quarterbacks will just whisper. That's efficiency."

5 Years

You can always count on the bright crowd at UNC to talk about State having a bad football team.

Funny.

State has whipped UNC 5 years in a row and UNC is on probation for academic fraud.

A bad football team

I sure would like for you to point out to everyone where someone said the wuffies had a bad football team. Your team is not bad, it's just average. In fact, UNC has been pretty average themselves. Maybe one or both teams will change that really soon? ...

agree

State does not have a bad football team. They used to be bad, but yes have improved somewhat. In fact, I predict a parade in their near future. ;-)

Hit the nail on the head !

I went to the Clemson game LAST year and IT WAS DEAD ! They cheered of course when State started whooping them, but it wasn't 100%. Whine and cheese.

TOB said, ".......the reason

TOB said, ".......the reason I wanted to coach at NCSU, was the fan enthusiasm, in our loss (Boston College) down there".

Case shut.

makes sense

TOB is a perfect fit for NCSU ;-)

too funny

What is interesting is how many fans would have still been in the parking lot had State not started their comeback in the 4th quarter?

Of course, I must admit that the crowd did look "good" at the end of the game. Certainly better than the Dook - UVA game or the the UNC - Idaho game crowds.

SECOND HALF

I was waiting to see how many fans wouldn't return after halftime, as the Pack offense looked comatose in the first half. As it turned out, most came back and rewarded with a stop by the Pack's defense on FSU's first drive, followed by a long drive for State's first score, a field goal. Pretty much everybody stayed to the end from that point.

Eat Mor Chikin

I was one of the first folks back in the stadium. However, I wasn't able to get back to my seat till the 3rd down stop. Had to get a chicken sandwich and a drink. Priorities, ya know.

CF is THE loudest stadium in NC and ranks in the top3- for the ACC. Something about all that sound being trapped in the natural valley it's built in and that sound reverberating off of the stands. That roar is such a great sound.

Still can't believe what I witnessed Saturday night. Glad NCSU's got this weekend off. Hopefully that break will be enough time for the team to come back down to earth and get ready for a tough UMd defense.

Lol

Give me a break with this apology garbage from Andy. The fact of the matter is C-F isn't a loud place overall. It's simply not. I've been there more than most so I should know. As far as Saturday night goes, I expect nothing less from any fan base at home when the home team beats a top 5 team.

So spare me this apology, Andy. It simply was not warranted. I can only imagine the emails, phone calls and door bell ringing you had to endure after saying this last week. This fan base is psycho. #fatasswithshirtoffswingingfrompole

I'll put CF up against any

I'll put CF up against any stadium in NC, including that cute little high school stadium in Greenville.

Alrighty

If you want to go up against a CUSA school when it comes to noise - we can do that. Maybe you'll have a fighting chance in this department? Pretty darn loud in D-F two years ago!

Staples Apology

Apology accepted, Andy . . . but with one condition:  Add an addendum to your FSU pledge that you will never, NEVER use the words "top recruiting class" and UNC in the same sentence unless you're talking about basketball.  Go and sin no more.

Poindexter

I bet you're a real hit at cocktail parties.

What's the big deal...if you

What's the big deal...if you don't like enthusiasm, team support and a lot of noise, just don't come to Carter Finley. You won't be missed.

Being a true NC State fan I

Being a true NC State fan I know there must be a conspiracy in here somewhere. I'm guessing it's a committee at ESPN that meets once or twice each season and asks the question "What can we do to p*ss off those hayseeds in Raleigh?". There was Mike Tirico with his "What do these people expect here in Raleigh? 11 wins?", now Staples with his insult of our fans and stadium, and I don't know how many shots in between those two. Seriously, this stuff will continue until we cross over that line and start winning against the SEC. Then we'll move from the "All the Other Schools" column on the ESPN chalkboard to the "We Like These Guys" column and get referred to with reverence. Until then we just live with the abuse. - CNN NCSU '73

Funny Stuff

I'm a big State fan, all I can say is........Very funny stuff. Nicely done by Andy.

agreed.  hilarious apology

agreed.  hilarious apology and good press for the wolfpack.

Crowd noise

Crowd noise can damage hearing. Sustained exposure at 90-95 decibels can lead to hearing loss. There is some kind of odd relationship between sports and noise. At Satisfaction last Saturday night, the widescreens were running at about 115 decibels. The owner laughed when I complained about damage to our hearing. I realize people use football as an excuse to get drunk, and drunk people are usually twice as loud as sober people, and that sports provides a venue for blowing off steam, but it is a health risk, too, to hear the loud screaming in the stadium or on the TV. So, if State fans are subdued, I say: smart people; they are protecting their hearing.

As a teenager in  the '60s, I stood many times on the floor of a Nat'l Guard Armory or night club in front of a speaker taller than me grovin' to a live, loud band on stage.  I rocked with the best of them.

As a college student, I left Reynolds many nights barely able to speak because of all the screaming and yelling I and my buddies did while trying to max-out the bulbs on the noise meter above mid-court at Reynolds.  Likewise, I left Carter-Finley many Saturdays from the same voice affliction from screaming approval to the Donnan-to-Martel TD connection and the Dennis Byrd-Chuck Amato led "White Shoe Gang Defense."

As a young adult in the military, I stood nose-to-nose with a screaming Drill Sgt. hearing & absorbing all the insults.  Later in the military, I operated as a gunner for the 81 mm. motars and later for as a gunner for a 155 artillery unit.

Now as a Sr. Citizen, I still play my Motown CDs loud and I still sit in Carter-Finley & scream insanely in unision with my Wolfpack Nation family.  Somehow, Disgusted 01, I still hear as well as I did when I was 10 years old.  Stay tuned for page 2.

Since you are so concerned about hearing loss, may I offer the following suggestions:

!.  Stay at home and watch games on your widescreen with active closed caption "on."

2.  If you insist on watching college football in-person, go to Kenan Stadium.  The Heels have little to scream about.  When they do cheer & scream, the noise level will be well below your tolerance standards.  A half filled stadium can only be so loud.

Hopefully, I've been helpful.  I just ask you hear what I am saying.  As the legendary Paul Harvey would say, "Now you know the rest of the story!  Have a good day!"

P.S.  Do not attend any NASCAR event that features a driver and a stock car in the same location.  As sensitive as your ears are, you may burst an eardrum.

kenan

Agree. If you want to watch college football in person, go watch a college game in Kenan. It is one of the most beautiful modern venues that exists. A bright sunny Saturday afternoon with Carolina blue skies, an on-campus location with trees and the Bell Tower standing tall and an ample number of clean restrooms (used by patrons). That is why it is referred to as BKS.

Forgot

You forgot to mention that whoever goes there should bring a good set of sunglasses to block the sun's rays from beaming off of all of that aluminum.

Beats the hell out of

... Having to remind folks to bring their bright orange (safety) jacket into C-F!

so that was you running

so that was you running around carter finley whinning about ear plugs on saturday night???

"the Wolfpack faithful,

"the Wolfpack faithful, which is known to be difficult on both rival fan bases and the media."

What moron came up with that ignorant garbage, Heather Dinich?!  NC State fans are known by other ACC fans (and beyond) as some of the best fans in the conference.  They're known for traveling well, being hospitable and knowing football (even though they suck). Yes, they are passionate (like all fans).  I guess NC State fans will be waiting for another apology after the above ignorant slight...

Sad excuse for a story.
