RALEIGH — After running back Shadrach Thornton scored his first touchdown on the first drive of the game, N.C. State coach Tom O'Brien tried to keep the freshman from getting too over-hyped about the fast start.
Mark Gottfried's contract got an automatic two-year extension when N.C. State made the NCAA tournament last March. The second-year basketball coach got a $750,000 raise on Friday for the Wolfpack's 24-win season which ended in the Sweet 16.
Gottfried will make $1.95 million annually, which ranks second among ACC coaches.
The NCAA cleared N.C. State freshman guard Rodney Purvis on Monday afternoon.
The McDonald's All-American guard will be eligible to play basketball for the Wolfpack this season after the NCAA completed a review of Purvis' high school, Upper Room Christian Academy in Raleigh.
N.C. State coach Tom O'Brien suspended running back Mustafa Greene for Saturday's 31-7 win over South Alabama.
O'Brien didn't give a reason for Greene's absence, nor did he give a timetable for Greene's return.
"I don't have any comment on his status going forward," O'Brien said.

RALEIGH -- Throughout the week, Duke head coach David Cutcliffe said the only way Duke could truly put its loss at Stanford in the past was to get back to work.

N.C. State will have a new look this basketball season. The word "State" remains on the front of the jersey but the "S" is the block "S" the school uses its primary logo.
Also, on there's a wolf on each shoulder on the front of the jersey. Several players tweeted pictures of the new uniforms, including the photo above by Ralston Turner.
Coach Mark Gottfried also posted a picture of C.J. Leslie on his Twitter account.

Senior Earl Wolff has started 28 straight games for N.C. State. That streak is in question for Saturday's home opener against South Alabama.
Wolff suffered an undisclosed injury in the second half of N.C. State's 10-7 win over Connecticut last Saturday and missed the entire fourth quarter. Wolff has been limited in practice this week and his status for South Alabama is uncertain.
N.C. State made the NCAA tournament last season on the strength of its nonconference schedule.
There won't be as many big games outside the ACC this season (Michigan, UConn), but the schedule is loaded with RPI-helpers (Western Michigan, St. Bonaventure) and experienced tournament teams (Norfolk State, Cleveland State).
EAST HARTFORD, Conn. — N.C. State needed a win after losing its opener to Tennessee, not style points.
Artistry was definitely at a premium but N.C. State held on for a 10-7 win over Connecticut after an excruciating 60 minutes of football.
Mike Glennon's 46-yard touchdown pass to Bryan Underwood and a 41-yard field goal by Niklas Sade were N.C. State's only points.
Quarterback Russell Wilson and guard J.R. Sweezy are expected to start for Seattle on Sunday in their opener at Arizona. Sweezy played defensive tackle in college but has moved to offense in the pros.
Defensive tackle Markus Kuhn played last night for the New York Giants in their season-opening loss to Dallas.
