COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Running back Mustafa Greene's troubled career at N.C. State is over. The sophomore running back has been dismissed from the team, coach Tom O'Brien said Saturday.
Greene and redshirt freshman receiver Tyrell Burriss weren't "champions in the classroom or champions in the community," according to O'Brien.
"So they're not going to get the opportunity to play on this football team," O'Brien said after the Wolfpack's 20-18 win at Maryland.
Greene's career took a wrong turn after leading the team in rushing as a true freshman in 2010. A foot injury cost Greene all of the 2011 season. Before he returned to practice this spring, he was arrested in Rowan County in February for multiple driving violations and then skipped his court date, which led to a new arrest in Wake County in April for a misdemeanor drug paraphernalia charge.
Greene also had a disciplinary run-in with O'Brien during spring practice, which cost him a spot in the spring game. Academic issues delayed Greene's return to the practice field in August but he was cleared by the season opener.
Greene rushed for 101 yards in the first two games but hadn't played since a 10-7 win at Connecticut on Sept. 8. Freshman Shadrach Thornton, who ran for 21 yards on Saturday, has effectively replaced Greene in the backfield rotation.
Burriss, who played cornerback during his redshirt season in 2011, had switched to receiver in August camp but did not play this season.
UNDERWOOD STILL STREAKING: Receiver Bryan Underwood extended his own team record for consecutive games with a touchdown catch. Underwood's 68-yarder in the third quarter gave him eight touchdowns on the season with at least one in each of the seven games.
Underwood finished the game with six catches for a career-best 134 yards. He has eight touchdowns on 22 catches for the season.
His season total ranks sixth in the school record book, with eight more to catch Torry Holt, who had 16 in 1997.
AMERSON SETS RECORD: Junior cornerback David Amerson set the new career interception record at N.C. State in Saturday's win. Amerson's interception in the second quarter is the 17th of his career and fourth of the season.
N.C. State improved to 11-2 when Amerson has at least one interception.
