I attended the State Fair Media Lunch today with fellow N&Oers Thad Ogburn, Deborah Jackson, and Richard Stradling. We got a sneak taste of some new items hitting the fair, which opens this Thursday evening.
What you see here is a "lemon stick" (basically, a peppermint stick inside a lemon), some deep-fried Kool-Aid, and some deep-fried bubblegum.
Lemon stick: Thad and Richard and I thought it was fine, but probably not something we'd pay for. You're supposed to pull the peppermint stick out and lick it, like you would a Lik-M-Aid Fun Dip stick. Thad liked taking a hit of pepperminty lemon juice squeezed directly from the lemon, but that was pretty intense. Deborah said it tasted like medicine.
Deep-fried Kool-Aid: It's the dark red item in the foreground and maybe our favorite. It's like a hush puppy with a sweet, moist cherry-flavored center. There's some Kool-Aid powder sprinkled on top. I could only handle one bite. This will be available at The Kerr Scott Building, the 1853 Grill, and the Commercial Building.
Deep-fried bubblegum: They need to change the name of this because it was really a deep-fried marshmallow with some bubblegum in the batter, and some blue frosting and bubblegum chicklets on top. The consensus: "Interesting." I don't think anyone ate more than one bite, and I had bubblegum stuck in my teeth all afternoon. This will be available inside the Kerr Scott Building.
