2011 N.C. State Fair

Get ready for the 2011 N.C. State Fair! We just couldn't wait until the fair starts on Oct. 13 to begin reporting on its annual 11 days of statewide competitions, thrilling rides and everything fried on a stick.

In this blog, we'll touch base with some of you who are already baking up that blue ribbon cake or polishing the hooves on your champion steer. We'll also keep you up-to-date on what's going to be new and different about the fair this year.

The new Thursday preview proved a big success, according to Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler, who was front and center at the Jim Graham Building this morning.

No attendance numbers were available yet, but Troxler had an answer ready anyway.

"I can tell you this: we set an all-time attendance record for opening on Thursday," he said, "because it's the first time we ever had it."

Gates open at 8 a.m. from now on. Those who hit the grounds as soon as they opened are getting breakfast without standing in lines and hitting popular exhibits before the crush of the big crowds.
