Get ready for the 2009 N.C. State Fair! We just couldn't wait until the fair starts on Oct. 15 to begin reporting on its annual 10-days of statewide competitions, thrilling rides and everything fried on a stick.
In this blog, we'll touch base with some of you who are already baking up that blue ribbon cake or polishing the hooves on your champion steer. We'll also keep you up-to-date on what's going to be new and different about the fair this year.
Old eyeglasses are lot like old books — you don't really need them but the thought of throwing them away just feels wrong. So they become a problem without a solution.
Until now.
The North Raleigh Lions Club is accepting eyewear donations — sunglasses, reading glasses, prescription glasses and even empty frames — at its booth in the back of the Commercial Building.
"We haven't been getting too many," said Leonard C. Wilburn. "It's not because they're not willing, they just don't know we're here. They say, 'If only I knew, I've got 14 pair at home that I need to get rid of.'"
Wilburn said the donated glasses are sent to one of the Lions Club's 16 eyeglass recycling centers where they are refurbished and then given to poor people around the world.
"For some people getting a pair of glasses means that they can finally see their grandchildren or they can get a job," Wilburn says.

EYE GLASSES DONATION
Sat, 10/25/2008 - 14:38 — Earl (not verified)I think it is wonderful that the Lions Club wants to help the poor people of the World that need eye classes. BUT the sad thing about this is the Lions Club is prevented by US law to give to any poor people used eye glasses in the USA. The glasses can only be given to people in foreign countries. Charity begins at home. The Lions Club need to get Congress to change the law. The Law was written to enrich the Optical Industry. Big business first....poor people to the rear of the line!
Earl, you rule

I wish there were more like you because I learned something.
you can go to ANY eyeglass
Sat, 10/25/2008 - 13:21 — dshell99you can go to ANY eyeglass shop and give them your old glasses. most have drop boxes for them, others you can hand to associates and they'll get them to the lions club for recycling. i'm glad they're doing this in conjunction with the state fair, but the short notice has probably thrown some ppl for a loop. but that's ok! you can still help! just contact your local eyeglass shop. trust me, SOMEONE SOMEWHERE will GLADLY take them off your hands. :)
short notice
Sat, 10/25/2008 - 12:08 — bratvolIt is indeed disappointing to read the news of this worthy effort on the next-to-last day of the Fair. I hope this will prompt the N&O to offer the club free advertising *in advance* of next year's Fair so that more people will know they can come and donate.
Short notice
Sat, 10/25/2008 - 13:46 — RichardStradling (author)Someone from the Lions Club called us late Friday, and we sent a reporter over to see them right away. We will certainly keep them in mind next year and try to get the word out earlier.
