Incidentally, Time Warner Cable's Melissa Buscher took exception to a rather snarky description of ESPNU on Page 1A of Monday's News & Observer — "otherwise known as ESPN Unavailable."
Actually, ESPNU is now available on Time Warner's basic digital tier — one notch up from standard cable — as channel 140 in our area. Digital basic, with more than 260 channels, will cost $71.95 a month under the new rates released today by TWC, compared with $43.71 for the standard cable lineup of up to 74 channels.
DirecTV, a satellite television provider, offers ESPNU as part of its premier package, with 265-plus channels for $81.99 a month for 12 months.
The "ESPN Unavailable" label carried more validity when ESPN first launched the affiliated network than it does now, at least in the Triangle.
