More on Canes-HD issue, Dish

Bookmark and Share

First off, there's a chance Fox Sports Carolinas may televise a game or two of the Carolina Hurricanes' first-round playoff series in high definition after all. Canes fans weren't exactly thrilled to see that Game 1 at New Jersey, a 4-1 loss Wednesday night, was not shown in HD, and the regional sports network is seeing what it can do. In fact, none of the games in this Eastern Conference series was scheduled to be broadcast in HD.

The reasons are largely technological, including equipment. FS Carolinas has access to two HD trucks, which cost millions to build. They aren't enough to show all of the games on Fox Sports' 30 networks nationwide in HD. Fox Sports makes the call on where to send them. It also costs more to televise a game in HD, and Fox Sports has to deal with bandwidth capacity limitations on its HD telecasts.

The Hurricanes, who are in the first year of a five-year deal with FS Carolinas, were shown 15 times in high definition out of 65 televised games during the regular season. Next season, 30 or more Canes games might be aired in HD. No word on whether additional playoff games this year will be available on HD if the Hurricanes advance.

In general, the team is satisfied with its television deal, said Kyle Hanlin, the Canes' broadcast coordinator.

"They're making the investment in our product as they see fit," Hanlin said. "We'd obviously like to see every game in high definition, but they're our business partner and we understand they have to make decisions, too."

Hanlin said he's gotten a lot of e-mail messages about the HD issue, as well as Dish Network surprising some subscribers by showing Wednesday's game on channel 475. (The satellite TV company usually uses 444 to 452 as its alternate channels for Canes games, depending on how much content Fox Sports airs. Dish says Game 2 will be shown on channel 449. As usual, DirecTV will show the game on alternate channel 645. Time Warner Cable will have it on channel 50.

HD Hockey

Watching the Canes on cable channel 50 is in Low Definition; It is the worst channel on Cable! Also,Let's get this MASN MESS straightened out.If we are the home team territory for the DC teams put them on;Time Warner should put them on so Nesn and Yes networks will not be blacked out when the Red Sox and the Yankees play the Orioles.Put MASN on any tier, just put them on!

Amen, Brother!

Heck almost everything looks better in HD but i think hockey benefits particularly. They need to broadcast 40-50 games in HD next year and all the games in 10-11 in HD. They also need to push to have all 82 Canes games broadcast at least in the Triangle area. And I too go to 30+ games/year.

Coverage

Thanks Roger, for the glimmer of hope that FSS might actually grant us an HD game in the post-season. However, I've grown very tired of this tv deal.

First off, you mentioned that Fox Sports Carolinas has 2 HD trucks. I have to assume that's right. But then you go on to say that those 2 trucks can't cover all of Fox Sports' 30 networks. Well, why would "our" Regional trucks have to cover nationwide events? I'm sure every region of Fox Sports has their own trucks. I know this because plenty of other teams have 3-4x the HD coverage that we do... on their regional networks.

Sports, and hockey in particular, look outstanding in HD. We all know this. If the league wants to improve the fan-base by tv viewership, they should be pushing for HD broadcasting. Yet we're in the position of watching a team 3 years removed from a Stanley Cup Championship, with roughly a dozen HD games.

And even aside from that... the Canes keep touting this excellent tv deal that they're so happy to have, which is honestly maddening as a fan. 65 out of 82 games? And we should be happy about that? OK, I guess it's better than nothing? Sadly though, I can watch pretty much any other team in the league more than I can watch the one that's 12 miles away from me. (And yes I go to games).  Sorry for the rant.  This TV deal and lack of coverage (particularly HD) is a sore spot for me.
