Fox Sports launches Carolinas network

Bookmark and Share

After agreeing to televise more Carolina Hurricanes games, landing a deal to carry the Charlotte Bobcats and adding South Carolina to its lineup, Fox Sports South decided it had enough programming to launch a Carolinas network.

Hence the new Fox Sports Carolinas, to be abbreviated as FSCR in television program listings. You'll be able to get it on the same channel you're using to watch FSN South, for example channel 50 if you subscribe in Raleigh to Time Warner Cable. FSN South will send a more Carolinas-specific feed to Time Warner for viewers in those two states, says Jeff Genthner, senior vice president and general manager of Fox Sports South and FS Carolinas.

"It was time to really localize our brand," Genthner says.

FS Carolinas will televise 65 Canes games this year (up from 55), 70 Bobcats games and 43 ACC men's basketball games, including 19 on Sunday nights. The new regional sports network will look for additional opportunities to line up programming of local interest.

FS Carolinas also will carry women’s basketball, baseball, Olympic sports and coaches’ shows. The network says viewers will continue to see regional programming, including Atlanta Braves baseball and Southeastern Conference men’s and women’s basketball, Olympic sports and coaches’ shows.

Does this bolster Time Warner Cable's case that it can reach an agreement with a regional sports network at a time when TWC is still locked in a dispute on that subject with Mid-Atlantic Sports Network?

"I don't know whether we'll have any impact on that whatsoever," Genthner says, who nonetheless notes that MASN carries Baltimore Orioles and Washington Nationals baseball (the teams co-own MASN), which is "not what I would call local programming."

That's exactly what Time Warner has been arguing.

Fox sports is one the most

Fox sports is one the most famous channels in all over the world. It has been telecasting for the last several years and are providing up to date information of every sports. I have visited their site too and that was the best sport websites I have ever visited.

FS Carolina's needs to get with the times..15 Canes games in HD

15 Games in HD...that’s horrible....I’m a transplant and my family and I have been supporting the Carolina sports teams for the 5 years we have been here. Were originally from Buffalo where hockey is god and to see 15 games in HD in unsat. Canes Fans 1st... Sabs fans 2nd. But I enjoy watching the Sabres on Center Ice because MSG broadcast almost every game in HD But to have 15 games in HD is ridiculous. FS Carolinas and the Hurricanes need to get with the times and follow in suit with MSG or NESN and get more than 15 games in HD for the Hurricanes Cripes...FSN OHIO is broadcasting more than 20 games in HD for the Columbus Blue Jackets...THE BLUE JACKETS

TWC: How Dumb Can They Be?

How can Time Warner Cable say that MASN is not local programming if the channel is carrying a good selection of our local teams in the Carolina's that always have had trouble finding a network that would agree to carry their games? This is why MASN belongs on Basic or Standard Cable Service tiers.

Examples below:
1. Davidson Wildcats Basketball Games
2. Charlotte 49ers Basketball Games

That list above is what I call local programming especially in the Charlotte, NC region. This also includes the unincorporated towns of Huntersville Davidson,.etc.

Not Local?

This joker says that Orioles and Nationals games are not local? Here’s a news flash: Atlanta is further away from Raleigh than either Washington or Baltimore.
But the real evildoer here is Time Warner Cable. First, Time Warner killed off the Bobcats’ TV network, C-SET, by refusing to carry the network on cable. Then Time Warner took over the Bobcats rights and delivered them to Fox.
Now they’re trying to kill off MASN by refusing to carry Orioles and Nationals games, when every other cable/satellite provider in our state carries MASN.
Time Warner has already been found guilty of discriminating against MASN. They’re using their gatekeeper status to protect their monopoly on what you can watch.

Conference networks

UNCAlumnus, I think all the other major conferences are keeping an eye on the new Big 10 network. I don't mind seeing a cable channel devoted to once conference, but I don't know if I'd want to pay a premium price for it.

Is there any chance of an ACC Network?

CBS and ESPN are becoming the SEC football network. ABC plays ACC games, but also Big 12. I wonder if there is enough interest and $$ to create an ACC network. It might not work, as the teams are spread out, and a couple are in definite pro team towns. I'm only 34, so I may see it eventually :)

Bobcats! Awesome. I'm

Bobcats! Awesome. I'm looking forward to seeing our team this season.

MASN is local programming

It's our only source for daily major league baseball...And I remember last year MASN carried a ton of local basketball games.

How about more Canes games?

Instead of trying to "look for additional opportunities to line up programming of local interest" it sure would be nice if FSCR would up their Canes games from 65 to 80. I think that would be sufficient local interest programming.....

Still no MLB...

The article failes to mention that residents in the Raleigh and eastern NC area will still NOT be able to receive the Braves telecasts with this new RSN. Also, MASN is still not "local programming" with our "assigned market" baseball teams of the Nationals and Orioles (Nationals 5 hrs away) and selected ECU and other local sports?? Geez. Looks like folks in our area will only be able to see featured MLB on TBS, ESPN, Fox (that means Red Sox and Yankees) and anything else (Braves) we'll have to pay for in the Extra Innings package. Perhaps this will be worked out by the time the Braves are competitive again.
