More readers on Edwards coverage

Reader comments on the N&O's coverage of L'Affaire Edwards continue to pour in. Predictably, much of it takes The N&O to task for "missing the story." But there is a sizeable contingent that says, "Move on." A sampling:
"John Edwards would have been named attorney general of the United States by Obama if he gets elected. The tabloid press ultimately had more legitimacy than you folks at McClatchy. You keep feeding us stuff from the Associated Press and New York Times that is not honest and is somewhat to left of Genghis Khan. If you folks at McClatchy want to increase circulation and continue to interest readers, you’re going to have to get on a more conservative path in line with people of North Carolina and not miss stories like this. You all in Charlotte and Raleigh should have found this out and followed up on it, and you all blew it." Dr. Bill Goodwin, Laurinburg.
"Give us a break on further Edwards updates. He cannot even bring himself to be wholly honest about it. So we all know, little bits and pieces are going to leak out in the days and weeks ahead. Who cares?" Joe Dew, Raleigh.
"Perhaps the N&O defense should be the Sgt. Schultz' 'I know nothing.' Scooped by the Enquirer and proud of it." Stan Wilson "I am disgusted with news media in general and the N&O in particular. Edwards has made his peace with his family, Hunter and Young have admitted the paternity of the baby. What more do you want? Do you need to print, through imagination and innuendo, every tawdry tidbit you can think of to attract readership? Give it a rest! Focus on some of the wonderful stories of the Olympic athletes who have come to the Games despite overwhelming difficulties!" Carol Scott, Durham
"As a subscriber for over 29 years, I have found the standards of the N&O slipping, but this morning's was a record low. The war in georgia was below the fold and the edwards story was top news, with an additional several pages inside. Where are your standards?" Peg Shenton, Cary.
"I am sorely disappointed to see a once proud, honorable newpaper descend into the same gutter inhabited by the National Enquirer. The Edwards story deserved about 10 graphs below the fold on page 8A, not what you gave it. You need to heed Josephus Daniels' will and be true to your history." Chuck Mooney, Raleigh.
"You have joined the ranks of a tabloid with the demise of the Edwards family. Shame on you! Georgia,Russia clash will have more effect on our nation than the 'smut' of an affair involving the local political 'golden boy"'(no longer)." Mary Lou Kennedy.
"I find it disturbing that the media is so bent on swaying this election, that they will allow a story like the Edwards affair to go unreported because he is a Democrat. It is a sad day for the press when the National Enquirer has become the leader of a free press. Perhaps it is The News and Observer that should be sold at the checkout counter in the grocery store. Shame on you guys." Roy Ellis, Hurdle Mills.
"How could you devote almost 3 pages to a subject that is nobody's business about a man that no one cares about? There are far more 'newsworthy' events happening in the world that a personal matter surrounding a political has-been." Lyn Fedden, Morrisville.
"'Who cares?' I think that should have been the headline on Saturday after the former senator's confession on Friday. And if not, maybe the headline should have been 'Russia Invades Georgia' or 'Phelps Sets Out to Win 8 Gold.' It's depressing that the personal life of politicians enthralls the public as much as it does." Rachel Prather, Cary.

Edwards

John Edwards is no longer a candidate for President and his affair is -- or should be-- irrelevant to the election. Meanwhile, I'd be interested in some more coverage and commentary about a presidential candidate who embarked on an affair while married and announced it to his wife while she was recovering from a serious health crisis. No, that 's not Edwards---it's John McCain. Are any of the Right Wing Attack Dog Talking Heads discussing whether McCain's shabby exit from his first marriage indicates that he's not fit to be a President? Or is it okay to abandon your wife and children for a young, pretty, rich blonde if you've been a prisoner of war?
