The local Sierra Club announced its endorsements today for upcoming elections in Raleigh and Cary. The group will host a meet-the-candidates event tonight for its Raleigh selections.
Candidates will speak about how they first came to identify with protecting the environment; their proudest accomplishments; and what is at stake environmentally in these elections, according to an announcement from the Sierra Club. There will also be an audience Q&A.
City Councilwoman Nancy McFarlane, an independent, won the club's endorsement for Raleigh mayor over Republicans Billie Redmond and Randall Williams.
Elected in 2007, McFarlane has supported Mayor Charles Meeker's progressive agenda, centered on greenways, parks and mass transit. She calls for water conservation measures to protect the area's water supply. This year, McFarlane supported a one penny per 100 gallon fee on water use to help purchase conservation land in the Falls Lake watershed.
In the Raleigh city council races, endorsements went to at-large candidate Russ Stephenson, District A candidate Randy Stagner, District C incumbent Eugene Weeks and District D incumbent Thomas Crowder, who is unopposed.
In Cary, Mayor Harold Weinbrecht, at-large candidate Lori Bush and District D hopeful Gale Adcock earned support.
“These are the candidates that will help promote and protect our quality of life as they insure we retain our top rating in the nation to do business,” said Timothy Reed, a spokesperson for the group.
Tonight's event is at Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Raleigh, Clara Barton Room. 3313 Wade Avenue, Raleigh, NC 27607. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Program is 7–8 p.m. A wine and appetizer reception with candidates will follow the event
