Raleigh Mayor Nancy McFarlane noted the recent passing of Stan Norwalk in her opening remarks at today's City Council meeting.
Norwalk, a former Wake County commissioner, died Thursday in Overland Park, Kan., where he and his wife moved to be near family as his health declined. He was 80.
Norwalk was among the founders of WakeUP Wake County, a left-leaning group that favors controlled growth, school diversity and expanded mass transit. McFarlane's husband, Ron, serves on the WakeUP board.
Many people in city government crossed paths with Norwalk during his years of volunteer service, McFarlane said.
"He always gave a great deal of himself, and the county is a much better place for it," she said.
