Raleigh Word of God has made no announcement, but former Concord Cannon coach Erasto Hatchett seems to have emerged as the top candidate as the school's new boys basketball coach.
Hatchett is the brother-in-law of prized N.C. State basketball guard recruit Ryan Harrow of Marietta (Ga.) Walton, but Harrow is not expected to transfer to Word of God. Hatchett was an assistant coach at Cannon when Harrow played there before moving back home to Marietta for last season.
Hatchett was the interim head boys basketball coach at Cannon for the 2008-9 season.
Hatchett played at Johnson C. Smith University and later was an assistant womens’ basketball coach for four years at
Johnson C. Smith.
Word of God is expected to field one of the top high school teams in the country. In addition to 6-9 C.J. Leslie, who is ranked among the top seniors in the country, the Rams have Dezmine Wells, a 6-4 junior who has offers from schools such as Miami, South Carolina, Baylor, Tennessee and N.C. State.
Kevin Washington, the Word of God athletics director, said he could not comment on the basketball coaching position and referred questions to Anesha Pittman, the school's principal. Pittman said the school would have no comment on the basketball coaching position at this time.
