Wakefield 58,
Athens Drive 39
RALEIGH — Wakefield’s defensive pressure helped it defeat Athens Drive in the second round of the NCHSAA girls 4-A tournament.
“We had a good run in the second period and were up by 17,” said Wakefield coach Danielle Blackburn. “At the half, I told our girls it was all about defense the rest of the way. If we played great defense, we’d win. We did.”
Kayla Harris led Wakefield with 23 points. Sarah Wollet had 20 and Kelsey Evans scored 13.
Wakefield (25-2) will play at Hillside on Friday night.
The Wolverines have posted 26-2, 26-2 and 30-1 records the past three years.
