Wake, Johnston, Durham postpone events

Bookmark and Share

All activities are cancelled beginning with the dismissal of school this afternoon through the weekend at Wake, Durham and Johnston County Schools. Chapel Hill also have cancelled all of their activities for tonight and the weekend.

The public school's decisions do not affect area private schools.

High school teams will not be able to play or practice after school today until next Monday. Schools in those systems will not be allowed to participate in the state high school gymnastics championships that were scheduled for Saturday.

"I talked with Superintendent [Del] Burns this morning and he made the decision," said Bobby Guthrie, the Wake County Schools athletic director. "We cannot guarantee what time games would be over and we don't know what the conditions will be.

"You are not only looking at transporting teams, but also athletes and their families getting home. Every forecast we has seen calls for icy conditions.

"We want to do everything we can to keep our children safe."
