Smithfield-Selma forfeits its football win over Harnett Central

Bookmark and Share

Smithfield-Selma has forfeited its Oct. 5 prep football victory over Harnett Central the school announced Tuesday morning. The Spartans used an ineligible player in the game, according to SSS athletics director Chase Crocker.

"There was an oversight in the enrollment process of one of our student athletes, due to this we must forfeit our win over Harnett Central," Crocker said in a statement. "Mr. (Mike) Taylor (SSS principal) and myself take full responsibility in the oversight and will put checks into place to prevent this from ever happening again."

SSS took a 21-16 win on the field in the contest for its only win of the season. The change moves Harnett Central to 3-6 overall and 2-4 in the Greater Neuse River 4A Conference. The Trojans are now part of a four-way tie for fourth with Southeast Raleigh, West Johnston and East Wake.

The Spartans are now 0-10 overall, 0-6 in the league. SSS completes its season Friday against Southeast, while Harnett Central hosts Garner.

About the blogger

D. Clay Best has served as the sports editor of The Herald since 1997 and has covered high school sports since 1992. He's gone through many neighborhoods of NFL-fandom including the Cowboys, Raiders and Patriots and is in limbo right now. If that's not enough to require therapy, he also has way too much brain space filled with useless info on the legendary '80s TV series "Miami Vice."
