Two more varsity lacrosse programs in the area are expected this spring.
The NCHSAA has released a draft of next year's lacrosse conferences, and on them are a few new programs. Sanderson, which fielded a club boys' lacrosse team last spring, will be a varsity. Heritage will field a varsity girls' lacrosse team for the first time.
Three other schools in the state (Jacksonville, Sun Valley and Lake Norman Charter) are adding girls' lacrosse teams while two (Sun Valley and Davie County) are adding boys' lacrosse teams.
Sanderson's boys will be in Conference 3 with Broughton, Enloe, Garner, Heritage, Leesville Road, Millbrook, Southeast Raleigh (which folded its team last year) and Wakefield.
Heritage's girls will be in Conference 3 with Broughton, Cardinal Gibbons, Enloe, Leesville Road Millbrook and Wakefield.
Less than one-fourth of all NCHSAA teams play either lacrosse, so the NCHSAA groups its conferences differently from other sports.
In total, the Triangle has 18 varsity girls' lacrosse programs and there are 59 statewide. For boys' lacrosse, the Triangle has 28 programs and there are 79 statewide.
