Ryan Kelly visits Vanderbilt; plans trips

Bookmark and Share

Ravenscroft basketball forward Ryan Kelly is making an official visit to Vanderbilt this weekend.

Kelly, 6-10 and one of the hottest recruits in the country, has other official visits scheduled to Wake Forest (Sept. 6), Notre Dame (Sept. 13) and Georgetown (Sept. 20).
North Carolina and Duke are his other finalists, but he is familiar with both programs and he can only take five official visits.
Kelly exploded on the national scene this spring and generally is ranked among the top 25 senior prospects in the country.

"Ryan is making a very systematic decision," said Doreen Kelly, his mother. "He isn't going to be swayed by what he likes on a visit. He is going to make the "broken leg" decision — where would he want to go to school if he wasn't playing basketball.

"I am thrilled with the schools he is considering. They all offer him great academics and great athletics."

Kelly is from a multi-generational basketball family.

On visits, Doreen Kelly is not so much interested in hearing about how wonderful her son is. She'd much rather hear about how that particular school runs its secondary break.

"I'm not sure the coaches are used to moms asking that," she said.

Ryan's Vanderbilt visit...

Ryan is undoubtably mature beyond his years to not get 'caught up' in the recruiting hype. I went to Vanderbilt so I know much of what he's experiencing this weekend. Don't be surprised if he ends up chosing Vandy. Kevin Stallings has built a great program at a great school-- Vanderbilt & Notre Dame are tied at #18 Best Schools nationally. Believe me Ryan will be impressed. Now, only Ryan will know if their group of players are the guys he wants to spend the next 3-4 years with. He will be the highest ranked player but this class and last year's class has/had all top 100 players. If A J Ogilvy stays around another two (2) years (he's a soph) the 2010 team will be Final Four caliber and could compete for the NC. VanDSIRROM www.VandySportsNews.com

Now, only he will know if their group of players are THE guys he wants to spend the next 4 years with. Just don't be surprised if Vanderbilt becomes his choice. Kevin Stallings is building/has built a great MBB program at a great school--VU & Notre Dame are tied at #18 Best Schools nationally.
Ryan would be their highest ranked player should he make that choice but every player in this and '07 recruiting class is a top 100 ranked player.
Also, if A J Ogilvy stays around for two (2) more years (he's a soph) Vandy may have material for a final four team and possibly could compete for the NC.
