Revised NCHSAA realignment (staff model draft)

Bookmark and Share

The N.C. High School Athletic Association's staff model of realignment for the 2013-17 seasons has been posted.

These conferences are not finalized.  This is just the most recent draft.

Like NCHSAA comissioner Davis Whitfield said this week: "realignment is a nine-inning game, and we're in the second inning."

Recently, the NCHSAA released a computer model that was programmed to group conferences into 6-8 teams with no split conferences. It served as a starting point to the staff's model, which does include split conferences.

We still have two more drafts of realignment to go -- a second draft will be made on Feb. 15 and the final one will be released in May. However, this draft is more similar to the final product than the previous draft done by the computer model.

Here are the proposed conference changes to our area teams. In parentheses, we use the conference name as we know these leagues now.

4A classification

Conference 10 (PAC-6) Conference 11 (Cap-8) Conference 12 (Greater Neuse) Conference 13 (Tri-9)
Green Hope Heritage Broughton Apex
Hillside Leesville Road Clayton Athens Drive
Jordan Millbrook East Wake Cary
Northern Durham Rolesville (new) Enloe Fuquay-Varina
Panther Creek Sanderson Garner Harnett Central
Person WF-Rolesville Knightdale Holly Springs
Riverside Wakefield SE Raleigh Middle Creek
    West Johnston

Overview:  The four Triangle 4A conferences have a little different look. The Greater Neuse River Conference adds Broughton and Enloe, but loses Harnett Central to the Tri-Nine (or Tri-7 in this case). The PAC-6 picks up two Tri-9 teams in Green Hope and Panther Creek, while the old Cap-8 adds only brand-new Rolesville High (opens in 2013).

3A classification

Conference 10 (Carolina 6) Conference 11 (Cape Fear Valley) Conference 12 (Eastern Carolina)
Cardinal Gibbons (Hope Mills) Gray's Creek Cleveland
Cedar Ridge Lee County Corinth Holders
Chapel Hill Southern Lee Smithfield-Selma
East Chapel Hill (Fayetteville) Terry Sanford South Johnston
Northern Vance (Cameron) Union Pines Triton
Northwood (Fayetteville) Westover Western Harnett
Orange
Southern Durham
(Oxford) Webb

Overview: The old Carolina-6 is essentially a Carolina-9 now, and its teams come from six different counties. The Lee County schools are sectioned with more Sandhills-area schools. The old Eastern Carolina becomes only a Harnett-and-Johnston County league with Western Harnett, Corinth Holders and Cleveland being added to the mix. Teams like CB Aycock, plus Eastern & Southern Wayne are forming a split conference with Greenville-area 4A schools.

2A classification (one 1A/2A conference)

Conference 8 Conference 11 (Carolina 12) Conference 14
Carrboro Bunn (2A) (Wilson) Beddingfield
(Burlington) Cummings Durham School of the Arts (2A) Farmville Central
Eastern Randolph Franklinton (2A) North Johnston
Graham N.C. Science & Math (2A) North Pitt
Jordan-Matthews South Granville (2A) Southwest Edgecombe
(Climax) Providence Grove Granville Central (1A) Washington
Randleman Louisburg (1A)
Bartlett Yancey Roxboro Community (1A)

Overview: Carrboro is still in its western-based conference. North Johnston will still travel east for its conference games. A 1A/2A split conference popped up, taking three Franlin County schools and pairing them with five former members of the Carolina 12.

1A classification (one 1A/2A conference)

Conference 8 (Yadkin Valley) Conference 9 Conference 11 (Northern Carolina) Conference 12 (Carolina 1A)
Chatham Central East Wake Academy KIPP Pride (1A) Hobbton
East Montgomery Franklin Academy Northwest Halifax (1A) (Warsaw) James Kenan
North Moore (Durham) Kestrel Heights Weldon (1A) (Salemburg) Lakewood
(Graham) River Mill Academy Raleigh Charter Roanoke Rapids (2A) (Smithfield) Neuse Charter
South Davidson (Durham) Voyager Academy Southern Vance (2A) North Duplin
West Montgomery (Chapel Hill) Woods Charter Warren County (2A) Princeton
      Rosewood
      (Seven Springs) Spring Creek

Overview: These models look much like the computer ones. Nothing changes for Chatham Central or the "conference 9" charter schools. Southern Vance is now part of a split conference that better fits the old name of the "Northern Carolina Conference." Princeton and Neuse Charter have a few more new faces in the Carolina 1A.
