Purvis opens recruitment

Bookmark and Share

Rodney Purvis, the extraordinary junior basketball point guard at Raleigh Upper Room Academy, confirmed this morning that he is no longer committed to Louisville.

The 6-foot-3 Purvis sent a message by via telephone text that he had decided to reopen his recruitment.

Avie Lester, Purvis' coach, said Rodney wants to evaluate other programs.

"He emphasized to me that he has never said that he would not go to Louisville," Lester said. "He committed very early and just wants some time to look at other opportunities.

"I've told him from the start that he needs to do what feels right to him. He is the one that will be sitting in the classrooms and going to practices.  He needs to make the best decision that he can."

Lester said changes on the Louisville coaching staff was a factor.

"Louisville has made some changes," Lester said. "Rodney just wants some time to get to know the program."

Lester said he doesn't think Purvis has a list of schools that he wants to explore.

"I think he is pretty open," Lester said. "He wants to make sure he is doing the best thing for him and his family.  He is an unusual kid. He is very family-oriented. It is important to him that he feel comfortable."
