Southern Pines Pinecrest High and Cameron Union Pines High have suspended football players from their squads and have forfeited football playoff priviledges for this season after investigating an altercation that occurred during their football game last week.
Each team had players ejected by officials during the game. Each school investigated the fight this week and suspended addition players.
In accordance to N.C. High School Athletic Association rules, the teams will be ineligible for the playoffs because each had more than three players ejected for fighting during the season.
The suspensions are expected to begin on Friday night. Spring Lake Overhills plays at Pinecrest and Union Pines is at Chatham Central.
All of the players and coaches on each team have taken or will take the STAR on-line sportsmanship program offered by the NCHSAA. All players who are ejected must take the course before being allowed back on the field, but the schools wanted all their players and coaches to complete the course before Friday's games.
This is believed to be the first time football teams have been ineligible for the playoffs because of the NCHSAA ejection policy. The policy has been in place for about 10 years.
