National Football Foundation fetes scholars

Eleven players from Wake County were among those honored with scholarships this week from the National Football Foundation. Each one of them at the annual scholars banquet of the NFF's Bill Dooley Triangle/East Chapter was presented with a plaque and will receive a $1,000 scholarship to be sent directly to the university of their attendance.

Fuquay-Varina plans to add varsity boys' lacrosse, gymnastics

Fuquay-Varina plans to add two varsity athletics programs next year – boys' lacrosse and gymnastics. The Bengals were poised to be the only team in next year's Southwest Wake Athletic 4A Conference to not have either sport.

Fuquay athletics director James Mountford said that there is enough interest at the school to field the varsity teams.

NCHSAA 2012-13 Winter Season Wells Fargo Cup Leaders Announced

Green Hope leads 4A, Cardinal Gibbons leads 3A, Carrboro leads 2A and many more area schools are in the top 15 of the four classifications.

NCHSAA Wells Fargo Conference Cup standings after winter sports

The N.C. High School Athletic Association announced the standings in the Wells Fargo Conference Cup competitions up to the 2012-2013 winter sports season.

In most conferences, points are awarded based on participation and standings in conference play. Each conference determines its own method of awarding points. Conferences are listed alphabetically by classification.

Below is what the release had for all conferences that include at least one team in the N&O's greater Triangle area.

Spring break baseball tournament list

Spring break baseball events: Pitt County Classic, Johnston County Easter Invitational, Knightdale Roundtable Classic, Bobby Murray Invitational, Hilltop Invitational, Cary Academy tournament.

NC Basketball Coaches Association all-district teams for boys, 2013

The N.C. Basketball Coaches All-District teams were released following the state championships. Gary Clark and Isaiah Hicks were named the players of the year from their respective districts.

Denny Medlin of Clayton and Tod Morgan of Chapel Hill each won district coach of the year honors.

Area teams are listed below. Most of the N&O area high schools fall under Districts 5 and 6, but some are in District 8.

Isaiah Hicks named N.C. Gatorade boys basketball player of the year


Isaiah Hicks of state 3A champion J.F. Webb is the 2012-13 Gatorade North Carolina Boys Basketball Player of the Year.

The 6-foot-8, 210-pound senior power forward led the Warriors to a 27-5 record and the N.C. High School Athletic Association 3A state championship. Hicks averaged 22.9 points, 12.9 rebounds, 5.6 blocks, 1.8 steals and 1.3 assists per game.

NCCA East-West All-Star boys soccer rosters

Green Hope's Tyler Hawley and Joshua Kennedy, Sanderon's Connor Francis and Fred Woodward, Franklinton's Jared Miller, Heritage's Jared Miller, Cardinal Gibbons' Kyle Rhode, Corinth Holders' Melecio Rubio-Villagran, DSA's Owen Ryan and Carrboro's Than Thwai will represent the Triangle in this summer's N.C. Coaches Association East-West All-Star game in Greensboro
