East Chapel Hill senior Nick McCrory was selected to the U.S.A team that will compete in Rome in the 2009 FINA World Championships.
The world championships will be held in Rome on July 18-25.
McCrory is one of two divers named to compete in the 10-meter platform competition.
The N.C. High School Athletic Association diving championships are being held today, but McCrory missed the qualifying regional event. The regionals were held while McCrory was competing for a spot on the national team during the four-day selection camp in Columbus, Ohio.
"It was a difficult decision for Nick," said Ray Hartsfield, the East Chapel Hill athletics director. "He had won the state title for three straight years and I know he would have liked to have competed for a fourth. But we talked about it with Nick and his parents and they talked about it and the chance to try to make the U.S. team and compete in the world championships was something that is very special."
The 10 diver squad includes six Olympians. McCrory won his first senior national championship in 2008 and has added new dives with greater difficulty.
The World Championships team members also will compete at the 2009 AT&T USA Diving Grand Prix in
Fort Lauderdale May 7-9.
