Fuquay-Varina plans to add two varsity athletics programs next year – boys' lacrosse and gymnastics. The Bengals were poised to be the only team in next year's Southwest Wake Athletic 4A Conference to not have either sport.
Fuquay athletics director James Mountford said that there is enough interest at the school to field the varsity teams and that he's still working with the booster club to finalize both sports for next year.
Fuquay has had a club lacrosse team not directly associated with the school for four years, and last year's team had 30 players (one signed to play in college). Also, the school had a few gymnasts who train in Angier but have not been able to compete for the school in county and state competitions.
Mountford stressed opening up new opportunities to the kids who wanted to play. He was on the first soccer teams at Fuquay in the early 1990s, and the team had to often play games off-campus.
Mountford said the school is open to having a varsity girls' lacrosse program, but no would-be players have approached him as of yet.
